  1. That's the way I just went...
  2. I have until Feb to learn to swim. Hoping to start this afternoon. And then... to enter XTERRA and plan is to drag my daughter along and introduce her to XTERRA kids. Only pity is that she's having her birthday shortly before the event and will now do it in the oldest age bracket - most likely as the youngest in the bracket! But hey, it's for intro and fun. Think she'll love it. And at least she CAN swim.
  3. I have asked Disco, but the response may take up to 5 working days - and that is a reply within SLA. Soooo... having activated the VA thing over the weekend, I am yet to actually go to gym. (Rest day at last!) But Discovery seems blissfully unaware of this. I cannot activate my Gym Booster and when I go to Gym Tracker page, it declines me, saying I'm not policy owner, policy has not been activated yet. So... are there any hoops I must jump through or does it "activate" once I go for my first visit and an actual visit is pushed through to Vitality? Or must I wait for a couple more days - what gives?
  4. Huge difference between small dogs and puppies. Puppies learn they way and find their place in the pack. Small dogs think they own the place and (rightfully) get told they don't.
  5. Well done Pieter! Awesome feeling to complete that first one!
  6. Hacc, for most of us that means having half a glass of wine!
  7. I'm lucky. With all of my personalities I'm never alone. And neither am I. You should hear the arguments... Question on a more serious note - how about your local running club?

    Formula 1...

No, the also did not fly/brake and whatever else by wire. They had no traction control, other than right foot. They had manual shifting - tell any of the current crop of drivers to remove their hand from the wheel for most of the lap of Monaco and I want to see their reaction. They also only had a front and rear wing (flati-sh ones mostly) and not 500 mini aero pieces dangling everywhere. Air intakes at the sidepods were for cooling. Hot air went out the back because it was hot. Not shaped in such a way (by more aero) to stuff up airflow to the car behind you so that he can't overtake you. They had steering wheels instead of a control panel. You get in the car and drive it as is. You don't get to change diff settings, brake balance, etc halfway during a race/lap. Oh yes, and all of that with the mentioned big engines and wide set of boots... Small wonder I'm not really following the modern-day scalectrix - with whiners for drivers.

    Formula 1...

Let me be the one... 70's and 80's had real cars.
  10. At least I wasn't dreaming! But now I read it differently - it is for YOUR (additional) over 18 dependents. Thanks for the clarification, Myles! Appreciate it...
  11. Or alternatively... ja, I'm biting!... that the entries are being bought up in masses by people who want to make personal gain through this. I've heard on a run the other morning from one of the peeps in the group that they've heard rumours that OMTOM entries are being (illegally, obviously) sold at 2k! Because there is none left. New market created. I expect the same might be/would have happened with Comrades entries.
  12. Dear thunder... can they not make it simple to understand? I assume half a truckload or more of you are on Vitality and belonging to Virgin Active. Can somebody please enlighten me what the heck is actually going on ito benefits? Biggest question: Why "up to 75%" savings on monthly installments? Then in the same breath - Why does VA website only talk about 50% savings? If I read it correctly, it looks as if it is 75% for either/both myself and my wife, should we elect to take the only-go-to-local-gym-option, which is what I plan to do anyway. (Only for swimming... the rest I do outdoors!) Gym booster will get then you the additional 25%, presuming you've met all targets for a month. But that will then only be 100% off should you hit that 75% in initial question. What else have I missed - and is anybody (Myyyyles...?) aware of any changes coming for next year? Like I said, I train outside and only now starting to contemplate this in order to get swimming for XTerra/Tri's. Don't want to get myself into a commitment and then the T&C's change in 2 month's time.
  13. The special lady - in B&W...
  14. Oh bugger... I may as well say it. Going for my first swimming lesson next week. And it's not that I'm a bad swimmer, hoping to improve I CAN'T swim. Here goes...
  15. I look for humour in any situation. From funny clothes to coincidences, you name it. And I'm one of the smile-and-wave-ers... Try to acknowledge the support as much as possible - and have the odd chirp back ready when required! Further to that, enjoy the scenery. And something I started doing recently towards end of runs and things are getting a bit draggy... I "chase" groups/people. See somebody you miiight be able to catch before a certain point, just to keep the tempo going when the tempo does not want to keep going any more. Silly game, but fun. (I think everybody does that to a degree!)
  16. In my case, you lay on the grass wonder how the heck you're ever going to be able to get up from the grass again. And vowing never again. Then convincing yourself it's okay, you can get vertical. Then you start a slow shuffle. You realise it and try to walk normal. You fail miserably. Halfway back to the car you start realising that you're actually walking normal. Well, semi normal. It wasn't that bad. On the drive back you start thinking I could have gone harder there and there, but good thing I did not go hard at that (another) point. I wonder when entries open for...
  17. Interesting all this talk of IM and 70.3... since I just made contact with a potential swimming coach this morning. I run a bit and I ride a bit. I swim like a rock. Just decided stuff it, and entered for the CT duathlon, with option to go to tri if I can swim by then. But actually hoping to do the XTerra the weekend thereafter... Optimism rules!
  18. I turn my back to go ride some MTB and you guys write half the old testament in volume! Well done to everybody on their runs! Iron, trail runs are wayyyy more fun! And onto the eating thing - I eat whatever is available, either yoghurt and muesli (though not shortly before a run - I learnt THAT lesson the hard way!) or Futurelife. Run with gels and take them bit by bit. Divide one gel into at least 2-3 small servings and mostly water. Skip coke as much as possible, but grew to love those Powerade sachets at Oceans! Due to that, I think I used only 1.5 gels on the entire Oceans. Yes, it was my first and yes, I did not go to nail it, just finish, but still...
  19. Always a good choice. Was on antibiotics a couple of months ago and was specifically also told to be aware of this (for that antibiotic). Further to this, I always find that for a good week or three after antibiotics my HR simply does not recover - meaning it does not lower after a bit of an effort when you ease up. And then suddenly it drop back as per usual after those couple of weeks. Now, that may be antibiotics... or having been ill enough to be given antibiotics that does that. It's never easy and rest is a curse word for most of us, because half the training is for sanity! But it's worth not risking it in the end.
  20. Candz, the ultra is so much nicer than the half. Just sayin... I did one half (my very first half marathon as well) and I can for the life of me not see why it is so popular. Jackes, once you have linked the profiles, which you have done, on the omtom site you simply click on pay button and it takes you directly to the webtickets portal under your username.
  21. Pieter, how long is this race you're doing in 17 days time? Be careful not to ramp up too quickly, this will cause injury. Ja, the momentum on the treadmill does not exist on the road/trail... and there is a definite absence of softness underfoot.
  22. Oceans is very much on the cards for me again next year. Enjoyed it immensely this year. But wait - there's more... In my training state, where I (mostly) run more k's per month than I cycled all year (excl last couple of weeks where I was forced to ride a bit due to injury) I get a call from a buddy about a week ago. Soooo, in a couple of days' time I'll be lining up for W2W. Where's a facepalm gesiggie if you need one?! I think the term HKGK is quite applicable!
  23. Wonder which leaves they are using in that tea... or maybe that's what they were inhaling when making the price.
  24. Jaws, if there's one thing my time in running has taught me, it's never to judge a book by it's cover. At Gun Run I was again reminded of this. I started off looking at some people and wondering... now just howwww the heck did we even get seeded in the same group?! That was at the start, maybe the first few k's. Was amazed to see some people at half to 2/3 marks I caught up with, which means bugger where they ended, they got to that point faster than me! And that again made me realise that it's not just about "looking like a runner" that makes your tekkies move. I have loads and loads of respect to everybody attempting any run. Over the weekend I had a very lekker parkrun with my daughter. We were late and had to go past everybody at her pace. It was so great to see the different shapes and sizes of people out there, running, walking dogs, walking prams, walking/running together and chatting, just getting out there. Awesome to see! Edit: PS... I am still having this calve/knee niggle which is dragging on since before Cape Town marathon. Seeing the lady with the iron fingers tomorrow. Fisio 1 did not fill me with confidence that she's going to address the actual problem, so now for some serious help with the girl who sorted out my hip issues from cycling incident. Not really injured, but I know it's going to cause something if I keep on running (and the odd ride) as is.
