  1. Jackes, why do you even worry about a dreadmill in winter...? Don't you Bloem peeps just put on two pairs of shorts for the cold?!
  2. Loved those Injini socks, but they lasted only 3 runs before big toe had a hole in it. Do suspect that the mud on Bastille Run played a significant role, so may try them again.
  3. All I can say is a friend of mine runs with two pairs of socks, thin one under, thicker one over for blister prevention - and it works for him. I fortunately usually only tend to get blisters with reason - long rainy runs, sand/mud, etc.
  4. Jackes, once again, I am not the expert here... But went to Ghosts from NB and it was okay for low mileage. The moment I increased the mileage, my black toes started - for me second last toe, next to the "small" toe - and then the small toe followed. Much too narrow for me. Fortunately I recognised it and switched to use this in shorter runs only whilst using wider shoes from then on in - and no such issues since.
  5. I like my toe nails... so I am also on the half-size up bandwagon. Allows the foot to relax and spread nicely. But I'm obviously not the expert around here! One funny thing is with Altra (trail shoes) I probably went too big. Went with same thumb guideline but now whilst running I can feel it being too big and I presume it is due to their fit not requiring the size in length but somehow catering for it elsewhere. Interested to hear other opinions - esp as to why exactly one would want to go for the "perfect fit" option.

Most awesome weekend of bike racing! Even qualifying was exciting, unreal... Binder with another legendary drive! Interestingly saw an interview with MM done on Thursday where he said exactly what was showed during the race. As the race goes on, when the bike gets lighter and the tyres more worn, this year's Honda just clicks better and he picks up speed. Also amazing to have heard just how deep in trouble the actually were on the season opening races. Also looking forward to tomorrow - but will have to check the interwebs for reports.
  7. Hmmm... okay. Time to confess. I have only improved by 3-4 minutes. Apparently. But - conditions in last year's Winelands were supreme. Yesterday, like the rest of the Cape, we were blown to smithereens on the way out. Up to 25 k's, where you turned, plus a bit on the way back, you got NAILED by the wind. Then, as we turned we got a lekker downhill - and right there at about 26 k's, I hurt my one foot somehow. Know not how... just halfway down the downhill I felt an OUCH! in the foot. It's not as if I'm not used to downhills, I do trail runs more often than not! Anyhow, I ended up compensating from there, the rest of the leg getting hurt along the way. My calf was terribly sore and knee was extremely stiff towards the end and afterwards. Was fearing ITB issues. And in reality, was pretty sure my UTCT is stuffed completely. So got home in a 4:20. Not happy, but I completed it and,,, ja, I guess I must be happier. I did better than a lot, the wind was a HUGE factor and I finished running with an injury for the last 15 or so k's. And still got there... running a marathon is still actually a big thing! Today the foot and the knee feel better. BUT... I have had my warning and I am heeding it. I will definitely go to an expert to help me through this and get me sorted to train and take photo's on the UTCT. Definitely doing that one with my phone within easy reach, taking photo's all the way! I am NOT going to race that, having fun, taking shots and getting to the finish is the aim.

    Formula 1...

This is absolute BS. Yeah, I'm watching an F1 race again - due to the timing of the race. How the fff... do they rule a race to start behind a safety car and then the guys come in for inter the moment they switch the race on?! And that when the have more aggressive race tires in the garage?! Sorry, all for rider safety... but seriously?! They've driven under much worse conditions than this, plus drivers have had accident and (yes...) died in dry conditions. Start a race under safety car ONLY if the cars cannot ride on anything else than extreme wets! Otherwise, just race. This is becoming a joke. You cannot have guys circulating behind a "safety car" and the change to the 3rd level of wet tires just after they are released. All of this having enjoyed a kick-azz MotoGP weekend... Qualifying, plus all three races were better than any of this.
  9. Yo, thanks for the support guys! Will be giving it a shot, but Cape Town is a much easier marathon than Winelands. So not stressed about PB, but hoping to improve on last year's time. Haha, maybe not worrying about time may help. Then again... try and convince my stomach I'm not worrying come tomorrow morning! At least not this great unknown it was last year.
  10. Thanks Scott - will be a good gauge to see progress from last year. Weather depending, of course!
  11. Jackes, top pic is the NYC limited edition. Limited numbers apparently available in some shop in Jhb. Cool thing about those (other than the black and blue upper) is the one shoe has a red and one a green sole! Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I'd like that! What may be of-putting to me is that they apparently changed the ride a bit and made it softer than the 2, which is already quite soft for me. So, hmmm... I might actually try and get myself another set of 2's before they become unobtainable. Esp once on bigger sale once the 3 becomes more readily available! I have to agree on Mizuno comment. Bought a pair a while ago and they felt great in the shop. It killed my feet. I only use them for those short morning runs, which accumulates the mileage on other shoes! My forefoot was burning like crazy and my entire bottom of my foot got extremely stiff. Nothing over 10k's with them for me. I loved my 1080v4's! But for the fact that they barely lasted about... 650k's or so. Never used the 5 and the 6 has an extremely soft ride and a heel that feels very loose/unstructured around my heel area. That led me to take the Saucony... and running a second marathon in them on Saturday. He says very blasé... it being only my third marathon ever!
  12. Jackes, a lot depends on yourself and your strike and the condition of your calves, how long you've been running in 12mm drop, etc. If I were you, take it easy. Take slow shortish and flat runs in the lower drops and gradually get yourself used to it. Maybe you don't have to go as gradual, but rather safe than sorry. On the other hand you have idiots like me who runs mostly (road and trail) in 4mm drop, but I also have zero drop trail shoes (Altra and Vivobarefoot) and 6mm trail shoes (Sense Pro) and 8mm road shoes (Triumph ISO 2). And tbh, I pick the shoe I need on the day and go. The weird thing is anything over 8mm kills me! Where most people prefer that. And it's supposed to be more gently on the calves. I got calf injuries like you won't believe in higher drop shoes. Go figure. Apparently my calves are overly stretched. BTW, what is the "yoh yoh yoh" for? I have the 2's - presuming that's why I got it cheaper, the 3 was coming out... very happy with it. (Except maybe the grey front not being particularly eye-catching!)
  13. See, another case for "what suits you and your feet". It may just be the way my feet settles in the Ghost as opposed to the Saucony. The moment I put on the Kinvara, my feet felt like it was slippers! Maybe the extra drop I was not used to may contribute to the feeling of narrowness on the Ghost. I just know the odds of me getting another pair is zero - yet there are many people who swear by them!
  14. Echoing Koei again... and some personal thoughts. His first paragraph is the most crucial. What works for one person, may not work for another. You like Ghosts, I hated it. Way too narrow, got a jiggle feel under the heel and drop too high, causing me all sorts of Achilles and calve hell. Saucony, while Koei rates them as narrow, is quite wide for me relative to at least the Ghost - and my Sense Pro trail shoes. That is for the Kinvara and Triumph ISO (btw, they're much cheaper at Runners Rest and even Somerset Sport) I currently use on road and the Peregrine I just started using on trail. Sure, it's not as wide as Altra and I still want to look at Inov-8 as well, but it beats the majority in my mind. The other shoes I (personally) like are New Balance, which are nice and wide. But compared the 1080 with the Triumph and... the heel on the 1080 just never felt secure. But those foam soles they have now are comfy - just wondering what it will feel like after a long run. May irritate me by being too soft. Now, regarding the club thing. For Oceans I am required to join a club. And for me it was in the end a simple decision to join my local club. It beats these virtual clubs (strangely nobody has mentioned Cape Multisport, who are absolutely all over the show in the races I do) ito pricing and sure, there is no money-back for certain races - but I only do that much road running anyways. But heck, I am glad - I will already receive a third of my annual fee in back for not paying the temp licence just doing Bay 2 Bay in Jan. Feels like a temp licence was R35 just the other day... and yes, I am only running for two years, it's not as if I'm talking about the 80's here!
  15. Agree on this! My Saucony's was ready to roll with about 35k's (longest run of about 15) on them before I did Cape Town Marathon. And no (shoe) issues. Pretty confident that they'd have been just as fine with just 20 on them as well...
  16. You guys nailed it! Well done one and all for finishing - time is what you make of it.
  17. Will also be chilling before Winelands next week... Good luck to all!
  18. I can sort-of understand no number collection on the day - but then you have to be able to pick up somebody else's number! What about the guys that stay a fair drive away from the collection point?
  19. I'm with Swiss on this. Got used to wearing one when cycling and just kept wearing one when running. Also, I am now on Suunto strap which is also really nice - soft and comfortable.
  20. I was somehow baffled by this comment of theirs... When I asked them how it can be done to enable my kid's sport device (I passed an old Garmin down to her which has a dodgy battery by now), I got a message that I cannot register due to no ID existing. So, after 10 years of taking care of this person, they now don't have the ID and I must send a copy. Okay all cool, but here's the puzzling bit. They continue to say that I must note even when this has been done, we cannot link her device before age 16? And then continues to say but she can earn point through gym, parkrun and Vitality Races! The mind boggles. She cannot earn points for a 30 minute run, yet she can go for a parkrun and/or a race?!

    Formula 1...

Ja, the way it used to be - before some smartazz decided gravel traps are too dangerous. And then some Hamster took shortcut through a chicane on Spa, overtaking Massa - and used the defence that it's not stated that he can't do it... so now we have these sheety rules about white lines. Before that EVERYBODY ran wide out of Ascari and it was a hyper cool slingshot onto the straight. Our friend Murray Walker got waxing lyrical about Nige running wide out of Spa hairpin to cool down his wets outside the track on a drying track. We all could go on... I think the sport is in a sorry state. In years past I used to be all adrenalin having set alarms for early races and all. Now...? I miss mid-day races.
  22. Scott, just saying - and I might get shot for this - but the first word in the thread title should read Cyclists. Sorry, I cannot un-see the apostrophe... Application form for membership to the Grammar Police got eaten by the dog.
  23. ...and likewise - less than 2000 Oceans entries left. Are people becoming more confident or more crazy?!
  24. Ehhhrr... I would have voted for 6 as well, but I don't think I qualify for "Cyclists" any more... For that you actually have to ride a bike occasionally! I think I last rode in August. One ride. Before that also a 2 month break. And I'm planning a light ride on Sunday, if my legs will allow me to walk to the bike after tomorrow's "fun"...

While I do agree about the crash vs win ratio... note that even before this weekend I think only one or two guys scored more points in the last 6 races than him. (Incredible little stat, I nearly fell over when I heard that!) So obviously he is in some sort of form. Not talking about signing him - he was widely mentioned (because of the mentioned form) as the logical rider to step up in DP's place for the couple of races remaining in the season. LC would only have had that much to say - he can't distance himself too much from his supplier. And conversely by doing them a favour... you never know how much good it will do the relationship and "repayment" for such a favour will in all likelihood be very worthwhile. But that's just the view from my room in the madhouse...
