  1. It sounded like a good idea at the time to enter for Bay to Bay. Suddenly it is THIS Sunday. It is going to be "interesting"... fake it till you make it sounds about right!
  2. Swiss, you'll have more exposure to that, but when I run in the rain I wear my watch under my jacket. If I want to see something, I lift up the sleeve, take a quick peek. What confuses me more is how you'll get HR readings on the bike, since it's supposed to be a multisport watch. Or do they seriously expect you to keep the thing on your arm whilst riding? That all said, I'm not in the market for one of these, just opinionating. Not that I'd mind to win one or something!

Pffff... "fast enough"?! I think he would have been faster than Pedrosa.
  4. Urgh, also struggling a bit with a calf. Seems to be my Achilles heel - pun slightly intended... Every time I change something, or load up more or do more uphills, it's always my left calf that warns me first. Darned sore and a bit of a beach to roll, but at least it's responding. Well, what did not help this time was that a tannie with a full trolley hit my heel in the mall (wearing sandals) with said trolley. 2 days later I run and had calf issues on the same leg - I am sure it's not soincidence, the heel was still quite sore so I presume a bit of compensation in the stride stuffed it up. Won't be out for too long, though. Next up - Bay 2 Bay!
  5. Just saw this new option this morning. Looks like a nice idea to run (as opposed to ride) into the hell... and back out! http://www.tohellandback.co.za/ Direct link to the trailrun event: http://www.tohellandback.co.za/tohellandback-trailrun/
  6. Stealth master, Stella is.
  7. Take it easy, it'll come back to you. But no rushing. Just get all those joints and joining tissue up to speed again. Had the most fun run yesterday - decided to go and see what Rhebokskloof trails runs like. Wow, it was great - actually preferred running it to riding it! Very good workout - esp in Paarl heat yesterday... very little dry on my clothing! Really fun trails - a good pedaly MTB (mostly!) route makes for a great trailrun workout. Before you ask - yes it is allowed, even the signage says so. And the couple of riders I met along the route were all friendly and had chats to most of them in passing. Even when tired, I can get out of the way quickly! Can't believe they don't have a nice trail run event there, they've got everything going and host a couple of MTB events every year.

    Formula 1...

It will now be a huge giggle if the STR guys with Ferrari engines beat the RBR guys with the rebranded Renaults...
  9. Some quick notes from the short-route runnertjie... A) I got into Oceans Trail, so Ultra will have to wait for another year. (Is that a sense of relief?!) B) Also entered for Oak Valley XL trail (and planning to do Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge as well) C) Just now... before you think this should go into the Trail Running thread!... entered for the Bay2Bay. Sounds like a fun road run! By the time I hit Suikerbossie by bike in March, I'd have already done it by foot!
  10. Some pics from me for a change. Brandi want to plaaayyyy... And a very serious face for a one-year old! And then, not a great pic, but a good moment! Kahlua does not like water - so whilst I was watering the garden, here she is looking for the driest way to get to me.
  11. Ja, also in. Agreed, heckuva expensive, but want to do it once. Next year, Ultra... I think. Also entered for the Elgin Valley XL at Oak Valley. Sounds like good fun. Just a month earlier, unfortunately clashing with Argus MTB, but... just wanted to do that rather.
  12. I realised that recovery from the marathon seems to actually still be ongoing! Well, foirst things first - officialdom awarded me a 4:24 finish. Despite me only stopping my watch after receiving the medal (did not realise the banners were not the finish line!) at 4:23. But whatever, I was there to finish... fortunately not a discrepancy that will cost me ito seeding or qualification! Just... weird. My recovery attempts looked like this: The day after I took the MTB for a gentle almost 2h spin - ZERO legs on the climbs, it was laughable! (Slept like a log on Sunday!) Wed morning a nice flat run - flat, not flatout! Then I found that the Run the Vines for this month was Saturday on a friend of mine's farm, so I had to enter that. About 1k into that, the Winelands legs screamed back at me! Great fun, though, think I did that in about 48min - and it was awesome to do a harder run for the first time in a long while and tax the legs a bit differently. I actually told a friend of mine I entered for that (my first RuntheVines) to protect me from myself, otherwise I'd have wanted to go run in the mountain! Sunday a 50-odd k MTB ride, no serious climbs. And yesterday I ran a bit of the mountain again for a change, was sooo lekker to be back on the dirt! Will try to enter for Oceans trail tomorrow. If not... I maaay consider Ultra.
  13. Wheelsuck, don't get dee_biker going on podiatrists and inserts. He threw his away after "having had" to run with them for years, now runs in trail freaks, injury free. Strengthen the correct areas - think he made a good post about this a page or so ago. Radman, I have another to add. New Balance 1080. I started off with that as a road shoe. Interesting tread pattern makes it quite suitable for trail, though the upper did not like the punishment of trail all that much. Nice and wide and 8mm drop. Not sure about the exact stacks, but think it's in those same regions as those you've mentioned. I used the v4, sure they're up to v5 or 6 by now.
  14. Seeerious?! I have to carry my ball all the way there to get it thrown?
  15. Ja slanted rock... sounds about like my experience on rounder smooth rock and granite outcrops around here. But agree with you, overall grip is surprisingly good and works for 90% of what I run.
  16. Sorry, I was merrily swinging the cat by the tail... confession time! He previously also had a Camelbak, but got irritated by above-mentioned storage issues and a belt around the waist irritated him. In the end he fitted both Salomon and the Camelbak Marathoner and preferred the latter (see, I had a point! ) purely due to cost. His words - it's almost exactly the same thing and the Salomon was rediculously expensive. He mentioned "new Marathoner" so I don't know whether there was a previous version thereof that may have been different.
  17. I've asked him via a message which model it was and what the issues were. Will answer you when I get some detail. We're only meeting up again over the weekend - maybe more detail will emerge then. Edit: From memory I recall he had a lot of hassles with storage space and reaching stuff on the go, for one thing. But will let you know when he responds - most likely only after work.
  18. Koei, while you've got the word... Am I the only one finding the Pro's are actually downright slippery on anything resembling wet rock? Love it otherwise, they're a bit short of traction on really loose ground, but that's to be expected... but heck, mine are like bars of soap the moment I touch wet rock. Being aware of it does help, but in the Tunnel Run it happened so quickly that I ended with wet feet (fortunately feet only!) just touching a wet rock on the river crossing.
  19. I got a nice pack at nativesport when the new (2015) range came in. 2l pack for R800, which was in excess of R2000 a month before in the shops. Was roundabout Feb... just for what it's worth - it may not happen again! But that's what I use. Friend of mine switched from Salomon backpack (shock and horror!) to a Camelbak Marathoner and he is super happy. Looks a very nice bag, sits snug and between the shoulders with very little movement. And he runs FAR! Some other friends uses Osprey bags... So there's a lot of options! But for me nothing else comes close. You can take enough water along even for Paarl mountain on a summer day - and you have storage space. Very nice is you go to a chilly morning race with a long top, you just chuck it in the bag before the start! Try that with a belt... There's place for cell phone, tablets, a bottle with something else than water, plus obviously loads of storage for clothes, keys, etc.
  20. Okay, I did not break any land speed records. But I did it! First marathon, DONE! Stuck to the plan I had and ran well within myself. Then at about the 19-20k's I was still feeling fine when I just suddenly felt my calf shout out. Same spot I injured the week before the tunnel run. And then I ended walking the last 2 k's home on a 34k run. Went slower, but it was the hilly section of the race, where the calf will be tested. Saw the 4:15 bus pass, waved them goodbye and thought I'm not even going to bother, from here on finishing is the aim. I think that decision saved the day. Just tried not to worry too much about it, keep it steady and keep going. Got to the turn on SSW bridge feeling good, but for the legs. Went through the hill up to 30k's passing a lot of people to my surprise, had a good stop there, banana piece and coke lekker rustig. But the rise into the gravel road was a killer for a sore calf - and by that time some compensation points started throwing notices as well. Just walked that bit and went on as soon as it flattened out a bit. Next water stop got a quick rub on the calf and strangely after that, I just could not get going again. maybe it was the standing still whilst they were rubbing, maybe it was the unknown territory for my legs. Got home and my legs were very sore, they did not want to cooperate. But - I never felt that completely drained feeling I was expecting, the body felt good, just the legs that were shot. Last k - I simply could not stop grinning inside! Strangely enough I commented to my wife yesterday that I was tired, but my legs were actually feeling better and less sore than after the Tunnel Run. I just might try this again... Now - how long do you guys lay off after a marathon? I did a recovery ride yesterday and was thinking of not doing any running at least till Wednesday or Thursday - and then only very short and light - and flat! Calf is better, some perdesalf, compression, rolling and anti-inflammotories sorted it out. Fortunately not serious, just knotting up at the top of the calf, joining the knee.

NOW you're talking... Still remember him walking around with bracing around the leg. Before Valé came along, him and (esp) Rainey were my guys - was gutted with his crash. Never liked Lawson. Mamola and Schwantz were the entertainers.
  22. Okay, will add tonight - blocked... But it's the Winelands Marathon. And it'll be sloooow. Don't want to burn too many matches and have real trouble finishing. There'll be trouble enough without me setting off like Ferret... not that I can run his pace if I wanted to!
  23. Jô manne, don't even want to know how you guys are feeling about such a huge event. My and my short runs... I am starting to get some serious sweaty palms and wondering what got into me having gone for a last leg loosener this morning before Saturday's... first marathon for me.
  24. Did anybody else do the Tunnel Run on Saturday?! Not gone into it with a race-face attitude keeping next week and my healing calve in mind. Not very technical - despite which I managed to get my feet wet on the river crossing. Stopped along the way (somewhere in the tunnel) for one of my numerous photos and a colleague caught up with me and we basically ran together from there. What a great experience!

Those Black Macs do make for nice shots! They greatly aid their photogenic nature by going at a pace where the photographer can add depth of field...
