  1. From the little I've ridden at night, I agree with BarHugger. You need both - and if only one, I'd prefer helmet. It helps stuff-all to have a light shining forwards from your bar if you enter a turn at speed. It's worse if said bar-mounted light is on the outside of the turn. But that's just my R0.02, sure there's a lot of people with more experience.
  2. Ne-ver mind... Spez just took themselves out. I looked at the images on the site and thought the shoes looked a bit... hmmm... "smooth". I walked in and saw them first-hand... blaaaksis. Looks like those dancing shoes the cool guys wore way-way back... or even ballet shoes. My flippen many years old roadie shoes look more... masculine than these mtb shoes. So if I do actually get something in this year, it won't be Specialised. Not a fan of that look, sorry.
  3. Maybe just a new-year itch... but I'm looking at some new MTB shoes. Currently riding Spez Comp MTB's. Very nice shoes. Buckles don't like the odd crash, but still working... sort-of (yes, replacement pair in stock!) Logical choice would be to replace with the same. But who likes logical anyways?! And... I've heard (and read) that the BOA closure system is awesome... while it lasts. Which is apparently not very long. (I know somebody who had to replace his 3 times in 4 months last time we spoke - and that on the S-Works shoes!) And it seems big S is adamant that this is the closure system to use - and has trckled it down to everything from the Comp up. That all said, the Pro XC looks decidedly niiiice. (No, I do not have prices on them.) Which led me to starting to "wonder" about SIDI mtb range - mostly because I've read they are awesome value and lasts long once you've shelved out half a kidney - seen that there is exceptions to that rule as well.) Tried on a pair of Spiders and they are much better than the name sound. But I've heard that there's a new Spider for 2014, that Dominators are not something you want to walk with - and those Spiders had bloody stiff soles for non-carbon shoes. And no, I have only been able to fit one pair of the SIDI's. It's not as if you can pick 1/2-number sizes in any colour of any model at any shop. Only pair in my number I stumbled across... (Yes, I haven't been everywhere, I am just starting to look around - and already have questions) So, in short... any opinions?! Oh wait... How do these shoes stack up against each other? Further note - I am also now in the habit of using my MTB shoes for my road riding (fitted STracks to the road bike as well). Ja... sue me.
  4. Two weeks off, back since Monday. Having a blast... yeah riiight! Worst will be Monday when everybody is back and energised - and we're in this mode!
  5. Hey Tank, geluk! Hoop jy't 'n gatskop jaar wat voorlĂȘ!

    Formula 1...

Those are really neat! From a previous guy doing the same thing: Gold Leaf Lotus: Williams FW14: And no need to identify this one - think this absolutely rocks!
  11. ...or high 40's! It's hot, but it's dry heat. I prefer that! And in those days, you could sleep outside - we did that many evenings! You guys are putting me in a reminiscence mood here!
  12. We must've just missed each other then. We moved down to CT at the end of... was it 81 or 82? Was so funny, a couple of years later I was looking around in the stands when we had the Craven week down here (87), spotted a buddy of mine from primary school whom I obviously haven't seen since we moved... and we just hit it off like the old times. Walked across and met most of the old gang - justabout everybody playing for NC! It was just a great place to grow up in! But heck, it's changed a lot... biiiiig place now!
  13. I got mine from Will (William's Bike Shop). They didn't have the exact same ones I picked up in stock when last I was there, but there were some others available.
  14. That is a kickazz pic, SwissVan!
  15. Prepare for more damage... Lovely dogs and I love mine. Clever, cuuuurious, mishievous and sooo loving. And JEALOUS! Enjoy! Anniversary of her "lazarus" week - week after Burger last year she spent at the vet, ended up skin up bone and we were preparing for the worst - and then fortunately she turned it around. Soooo horrible to have seen her hardly able to lift her head, not eating, drinking... think I aged a lot in that week. And look at her now!
  16. Some more of the two... it's been a while! Nugget... anticipating a scratch. Kahlua eager to go play with my daughter...
  17. Many many many years ago... I grew up in Upington. Returned there about 5 years ago for a quick visit. There's not much mountains to mountainbike on... Even the veldjie close to our old house is now a hospital, jeez, we used to ride and ramp and go bossies there... Agree - ask the LBS, that'll be a good start. Only other place that might be nice to ride (but you can ride there with your car as well, last I was there) is "Maanrots" (Moon rock) just before Augrabies. Don't know what the rules and regs are there regarding access nowadays. We saw lots of game, so a bike ride there would be an experience (again, given that I am describing 5 years+ ago's experience - the place may have changed completely by now). But please inquire first.
  18. Just sign up for Strava... problem sorted.
  19. I'm IN! Can't go through another year (mostly through illness) of only two road rides!
  20. cadence - PPA seeding plays a role in getting you seeded for Burger AFAIK, so other funrides could seed you well for Burger. BTW - off the negative stuff. How about the girl that won (tied) the short route female section?! Getting a bike for a birthday prezzie 5 days ago and then klapping the short route! Awesome... Berry, the other half of the tie was a name I think I recognized... or is it not who I think it is? (If so - congrats! )
  21. Looked carefully?! haha, noooo chance! I heard a warning yell, saw the bike in front of me go hard right... went "huh?!" saw headlights on our side of the road, went hard right...missed it. (Nearly crapped myself.) There was hardly time to say "OH sh..." let alone look carefully. We happened to be two groups converging at that time and I happened to be at the back of the group, but I did not make it by what can be deemed as comfortable margins. If there were more behind me, it would have become more and more interesting as it rippled on.
  22. Dale, our entire group went over the white line at one point. (Then again, there was no marshall in sight at that time.) If they DQ us for that... coz here's the situation: Coming down the descend on Swaelstert mooooving and crosswinds making it interesting as is, I hear yelling and just see jinking to the right. Next moment I head right as well, having faced a car's headlights! Some eeeedjit decided to park his car in the left-hand (as we went) lane facing oncoming traffic and have a chat with his buddy on the side of the road! That with bunches of us flying down there on the left-hand side. Thanks to the guys up front who gave warning...
  23. Agree - most people were just out there riding for their own gain. We had people on the brakes in an attempt to avoid going to the front. And no letting in the guy who just pulled his azz off in front. And yoyo'ing. I had the most fun riding alone and then with one girl from a group behind where the two of us sat and rotated lekker for a while on the R44. Ja well, maybe I've just un-roadied too much... but it seems there are guys out there who really is less "road"-worthy than me. Sorry rant off. Maybe it's just a windless Monday getting to me...
  24. No worries! What's life without some surprises?! Same for everybody, anyways!
  25. No, not there, after that... you cross the N1, short little climb (up to the entrance to Hawekwa) after that. Then in past we went down past Nederburg (past another prison) and turned right there instead of going straight down to the biiig intersection with the Wellington road. Now, at the top of that short little climb to Hawekwa entrance, you get the Swaelstert pad splitting off on your right. That section leading to the Wellington road is entirely new for this year - and I haven't been around there in many many moons. Sounds like it's been tarred now (otherwise we'd obviously not go there!) Unless I'm completely off my meds...
