  1. Saw a BM walking with it through Alberts Farm while doing ride on the Spruit. Drone still wriggling like a wounded bird. Must have just happened. Asked where he got it from, said he found it in the reeds. Gave him R50 for it, now looking for the owner....cycled this place flat looking for some one with a controller Any ideas on how to go about this? Has SD card with video.....
  2. Any suggestions on open water swimming venues in and around Gauteng, Is Germiston lake safe to swim in? I've seen many negative comments about the lake online.
  3. I got this from a friend on facebook. Posting it here to see if someone can assist. From Sonia: Hello friends, I have some awful news which I am sharing with you in the hopes that someone will come forward with information or be able to help in some way, even if it is just by sharing this post/ passing on the relevant info. Andre-Louis was knocked over by a four-by-four in a malicious and intentional ‘hit and run’ attack during an organised, closed-off, cycle race on Sunday afternoon. I witnessed the entire horrifying assault as I was cycling just behind Andre at the time. The assailant was driving on his own in a black BMW X5 with the registration no. CY 25 JY GP. I only had a chance to glance at the registration plate before leaping out of the way to prevent the driver from running me over after I checked on Andre and pulled his mangled bike out from under the car, so I am not 100% sure of the ‘J’. The attack took place during the BestMed Capital Classic road race, on the N14 North just outside of Olivenhoutbos at about 1pm. The assailant was driving illegally on a road lane that had been closed off from cars by the race organisers and was meant for the exclusive use of cyclists taking part in the event. We were forced out of this lane and into the emergency ‘yellow’ lane by the cars that were refusing to drive in the traffic in assigned ‘car’ lane. The driver took offence to Andre cycling on the edge of the yellow line and close to the lane meant for cyclists but taken over by a stream of cars. He then pulled over and stopped in the emergency lane in front of us, waited for Andre to cycle past him, and then tried to knock Andre off his bike by driving into Andre’s back tyre as Andre was cycling. He knocked Andre’s back tyre several times before accelerating hard into him, throwing Andre off the bike and onto the road. Please could you pass the vehicle details on to your friends in the Gauteng area of SA, tweet it on twitter, and please come forward if you have any info about the whereabouts of the driver or who he may be. Also, please, if there were any further witnesses to the attack please contact me on facebook, my cell: 0835653181 or soniaphillips@gmail.com. Any info/help will be appreciated. This man is a danger to all road cyclists and further, due to the malevolent nature of the attack, to the public at large.
  4. I dare say this topic could have been covered before, but due to the tag, it makes searching for the topic a little difficult. I am selling my bike and I am curious to know what the normal expectations are around shipping, if required. How does a bike get shipped, insurance expectations, packaging, cost etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Simon

  6. How does one register to join a Stonehaven cycle race? Is there a need for any licences such as a UCI license? Thanks in advance. Miguel
  7. I will soon need to commute, I want to know if commuting through the R59 is safe. The area of the R59 i'm planning to commute is not close to Joburg therefore traffic is not that harsh. If the police see me on a road bike on the freeway will they stop me? Will i just be told to get off the highway or any severe punishments? The reason i have the need to commute through the R59 is that it is the fastest and most direct route to my destination. From a documentary i heard Chris Froome traveled through some highways in his teen days. Thanks in advance for help and your answers are appreciated Miguel
  8. Fellow Hubbers I am the organiser for the Joburg Freedom Ride and we are working a new project in an attempt to promote cycling in Johannesburg and in creating jobs, and we need you help to make this possible. The project is the establishment of the first Bicycle Empowerment Centre (BEC) in Gauteng. The project was made possible through the donations made to the first two Freedom Rides. The BEC is a fully functional bicycle workshop with which offers sales of cheap second hand bicycles and spares, repairs, community training and training of the Schools Shova Kalula kids. The mechanics running the workshop were identified in the community as enthusiastic cyclists with basic mechanical skills. They were sent to Cape Town for professional training in Finances and in Bicycle Mechanics. They have now returned with two certificate qualifications and are excited to run their own business. We are looking for any kind donations of old second hand bicycles, parts, spares, tools (toolkits and bike stand) and anything else you may have lying around that could be useful. I have attached a document summarising the project and the progress we have made thus far. I look forward to hearing back from you. Bicycle Empowerment Network report.pdf

  11. GROWING concern about traffic congestion in Sandton has prompted the launch of a campaign aimed at encouraging the estimated 9,500 motorists who drive into South Africa’s largest decentralised office node each day to ditch their cars for bicycles. The DecongestSandton initiative could see the roll-out of at least 10 bicycle lock-and-charge stations to encourage the use of greener transport alternatives among employees in Sandton. The Green Building Council of SA (GBCSA), in partnership with electric bicycle importers Cycology and Solid Green Consulting, are behind the company. The initiative comes after the City of Johannesburg announced last year that it was investigating whether to support the safe use of bicycles in South Africa’s largest city. A pilot project for a bicycle and pedestrian programme in Soweto — linking seven schools, two clinics and railway stations — had been planned. Jarrod Lewin, advocacy stakeholder manager at the GBCSA, said on Tuesday Sandton’s traffic gridlock was set to worsen, with a number of new high-rise developments coming on stream over the next two years. New developments under construction or in the pipeline will see Sandton’s office market expand by about 20%, according to the latest figures from the South African Property Owners’ Association. The new developments would result in the estimated 100,000 commuters, using all modes of transport, entering Sandton each day increasing by about 27,000 within the next two years, Mr Lewin said. " That will lead to even further congestion and the undeniable frustration that accompanies it." The initial phase of DecongestSandton will reach out to corporate Sandton to become part of a network of bicycle stations that will allow employees to cycle within the central business district (CBD). "We ultimately envisage bicycle commuting becoming as prevalent, if not a preferred, mode of transport within the Sandton CBD ," Mr Lewin said. "Our dream is for Sandton commuters not only to cycle to the office, but also between offices for meetings, for lunches, for shopping and for getting to and from the Gautrain station." Further, Mr Lewin said the campaign hoped to get motorists residing some distance from the Sandton CBD to park their vehicles at public transport interchanges near their homes. They would then travel into the area by public transport and use either bicycles or electric cycles to travel within the CBD. Solid Green Consulting director Warren Gray said a big challenge would be to dispel the notion that urban bicycle-commuting was impractical and potentially dangerous. "At the moment, many Sandton motorists feel unsafe and as such are button-holed into driving, whether it is the best option or not." A small drop in the number of cars could result in a significant reduction in gridlock. "In many other global cities … the uptake of cycling by a small number of former motorists quickly creates a tipping point, with others more likely to follow suit," Mr Gray said. Cycology CEO Vincent Truter said it was encouraging that local government was trying to promote a cycle-friendly Johannesburg. The construction of cycle lanes in Orlando, Soweto, and in the area between the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand was already under way. http://www.bdlive.co.za/national/2014/05/21/initiative-launched-to-make-sandton-bicycle-friendly
  12. Having attended the Cyclists Indaba (good discussion on the Hub - not so good at the Indaba) and a few other forums/meetings/planning sessions etc... I'm interested to find out what you would like at one of these events? I'm not talking demands or laws passed, or more officials giving 45min PPT presentations on what NMT is, and why cycling is good for the environment...etc There is clearly a gap between the officials and politicians, and then the cyclists and activism groups. How do you propose we bridge this gap?
