  1. Well it's time to go dual suspension and I have been riding Momsen since I got back onto a bike. I am totally in love with the VIPA but don't know what to do since recent advice. The Vipa don't have remote lock out on the rear shock and also don't come with shadow + it is also R5000 more expensive than the Spark 910...? What to do..? What is the best buy or value for money..?
  2. Had a warranty claim on 2 bikes,as it fell outside of the time frame,I was gearing myself up for a big fight. Was pleasently surprised when Victor came back and said although the warranty will not "kick" in their loyalty programme will. The offer made to me was excellent and I am still a very happy Momsen rider. Good one Victor and everyone at Momsen!!!
  3. Hardly the type of bikes one should put next toe each other. Trying to get my head around which hardtail to buy and what budget would be enough. I want to spend around R30k for that I would like a carbon hardtail. I will take the standard wheel with the idea to upgrade later on. From what I've seen, it is much of a muchness when in comes to a hardtail, yes geometry is very important, but at this stage I am not convinced that a R50k hardtail will ride easier that a R30k from the same manufacturer. Momsen is quite good value for money and it is local, something like the 729, Silverback Storm is also good value for money, not sure if it is still the flavour of the month and the you have the Stumpy, which for some odd reason just do not look as nice/aggresive as other hardtails. One could off course also go the Rocky Mountain/Giant route. Any suggestion, or should I rather save up for something like the Spez Epic or Scott full sus. This is mainly for cross country/marathon type riding.
  4. Who sells momsen bikes in gauteng? Thanks
  5. So my Momsen 2014 AL229 Bike which is the best thing to ever happen to me, (dont tell my wife and Kids) needed to go to the LBS. The gears kept jumping / slipping while changing and the final straw was when i got out the saddle and the chain jumped off and got stuck between the chainstay and cassette, which caused my knee and handlebar to connect solidly. So in it went, i pointed out to the LBS that the rear wheel slightly catches the brake discs but not majorly. No problem with the front. When i went and picked up my bike my saddle was loose enough for two dwarfs to play see-saw on. my seat post was lowered too, now i'm no mechanic but what are they doing up there on my bike when the problem is on the gears at the back? (maybe there stand clamped on the seat post ) I let it go and was charged for gear setting, and brake disc aligning for the rear and the front. But the front was fine , i let it go and thought maybe i just dont know it but there was a problem. On the way out i asked the owner what the tyre pressure should be and he said 3Bar all round. Rode my bike but wasn't happy, thought maybe it was just my mind playing tricks on me. This morning i hand no fuel in the car so i thought, Yay, commute to work it was on this mornings ride that i found my front brake, (which had no visible damage to the eye, ear, or touch before taking it in) was now sounding like Steel on Steel while braking and just before a complete stop it sounds like a cracked cylinder head. Ok so now only the back brakes are to be used to get to work. No problem as the majority of the way is up hill ( but that means going home will be downhill with only back brakes ), further on i found that when i lean to the left on my bike it sounds and feels like something is scraping, i dont no what though. As this has been the first bad thing that has happened to me with the LBS i though i would phone them and tel them, and i was expecting a simple " oh so sorry for that, bring it in and lets have a look", but instead i got a "well if you having that problem with your brake you will have to take it to where you bought it as i wont be able to do a warranty claim on that" from the owner himself. WTF!!! Needless to say i now want a second opinion and someone to go over my bike from head to toe. Was thinking about Tony Impey's as i'm in Alberton and he's in Bedfordview(13km away) but then i'm probably going to talk his ear off about Darryl and i'm sure he must be tired of people nagging at him about the TDF and Darryl already. I remember there was a post somewhere about a guy in germiston(since the early 1980's) who had rave reviews and was thinking about that but dont have any details about him? Any other suggestions? There is always the Hub at Rietvlei but i dont know there work.
  6. Hubbers, I'm in the market for a new MTB frame, and would like to stick with aluminium, and not go the carbon route. After doing some reading on the Net, there's a very limited supply of "high" end aluminium MTB frames on the market. Why is that the case? Do the suppliers feel that there's no market for high end aluminium frames, and that people would rather buy a carbon frame for the same price as a aluminium frame? Also, why did PYGA stopped production of the Zero29? Same goes for Yeti with the BigTop. Surely there is "some" market for these frames? I was even inquiring the other day about a Santa Cruz Highball Aluminium....with the LBS replying....They don't import the alu version into SA. Momsen doesn't have the AL829 model for 2014? So it either a basic aluminium frame for entry level bikes....or carbon for the future?
  7. Would appreciate some feedback from Hubbers who own or have ridden the Momsen AL829 over a period of time The specs look nice and it seems like a more than adequate XC bike. I have an option of getting a new one at more than a good deal. Thanks for the feedback and comments.
  8. Hi Hubbers Any opinions on this bike? Frame quality etc.?? ride? price? Please let me know...
  9. Hi Guys and Girls, Need some advise on best value for money 29er hardtail mtb, casual rider, budget = +/- R 15,000. Looked at Merida Big 9 500 or XT, Momsen AL 429, Silverback Sola 1 or what else can anyone advise me on like Scott etc? Looking forward.
  10. Hi, My brand new Momsen AL 329 was stolen from the back of block of flats in Gardens/Tamboerskloof on October 2nd. It's the 2014 model in black, orange and white) so there shouldn't be too many around. If anyone has seen it in 2nd hand bike stores or elsewhere, please let me know. R500 reward for info on the correct bike being found. 0781979277 tumatoe@gmail.com Tudor
  11. Where can i get hold of this frame ??? people say it's going for <3K, seems like the most viable choice for me... Assembling my own bike, on a budget of around15k i'm thinking of: Shimano SLX 670Groupset R6400+- Shimano XTR disc rotor SM-RT98 CL 160mm for the rear wheel R550 standard rotor for the front wheel +-R100 standard wheelset +tyres 2500+- (might be able to use my brother's old set) standard shocks R2000+- Xon carbon bar R300 Seatpost/seat/stem/etc R1000+- from what i've looked at so far this frame seems to be one of the better value for money frames with above entry level specs.
  12. Hi Guys and Girls Bent the rear derailleur hanger on my Momsen 529. Could anyone please suggest a LBS that stock Momsen bikes/parts in the George or Knysna area? Regards
  13. I am looking to build current HT parts over on dualie. I'm reasonably convinced that I am going to go for a Anthem X 29 frameset, having listened to some people and read some reviews, etc. Don't think there's much else that can match up or are available in framesets. Spez, Rocky, etc all seem to have a top-of-the-line-carbon-framset as their only frameset option. Other options are Momsen DL and I presume Scott will be an option as well. Much as I'd love one, I am pretty sure Dale frames will be a bit steep and then you'll very likely feel obliged to add a lefty as well. Aware of Booth and BSR, but... not entirely comfortable with what may be backup/support/warrantee issues should it be required. Did I miss an option you guys are aware of? (Unfortunately SC is not quite an option... ) Have I missed something important? Should I look harder at something like Scott? Opinions?
  14. jeez I'm starting to feel like a momsen rep lol Saw this on Facebook, good deal but only 10 available
  15. Momsen coming out with thudbuster seatpost
  16. I think we could all benefit from a buyers guide for the SS bikes. Name and link and maybe a bit of a personal review only please if a local Supplier, contact details if no online page or details available Rules of the thread: 1. no chit chat - this should be a simple guide for all, looking for either a new SS, or a upgrade to a current SS not a 20 page discussion on why bike X is better than Y 2. details of bike with pricing..doesnt help suppling a website, if you cannot by directly from them..( I hate seening awesome looking bikes... then having to spend 6 years finding a dealer to buy from) On-one inbred http://www.on-one.co.uk/ http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/ZXOOIN29SS/on_one_inbred_29er_frame_bundle Monsen STR-29 http://www.momsenbikes.com http://www.momsenbikes.com/frames.cfm?frame=STR29
  17. I need some help in a decision, haven't been riding for a few years and want to get back on a bike. Not as hectic as before, just a few fun Saturday sessions and occasional holiday sessions with the family. So I am in two minds and it fluctuates constantly....as soon as I make a choice a few hours later I second guess it and go with the other option! so I will give a few details and hopefully all the clever people can make me stick to one choice!! my details : height : 1.90m weight : 105kg -> hopefully getting it down again with riding :-) inseam : cant remember ...but my build is not funny like long torso or long legs, lets call it avg. my seat height BB -> Top of saddle was usually 87-90cm if that helps. type of riding having done the 5-6 hour Saturday and Sunday slogs, I am not keen on that. So no road riding due to traffic dangers and not liking to ride in roadie groups. So I want to do Mountain biking mostly. It will be on weekends, maybe a weekday here and there as I actually drive past groenkloof to go to work ! so who knows. I will mostly go to bike park places like van Gaalen, Red Barn, GroenKloof, Northen Farms if I ride. Like the safety aspect as I will be alone or with my wife. So the bike should probably be "fun" as well as capable. Will probably do 2 hour rides maybe 3 hours at a time. No Racing in the foreseeable future. budget I would say 8k-11k max. Options So most of you probably know this is going one way........... :-) the 26er vs 29er debate...so humour me , and look at the info above versus choices below and tell me what option will be better 1) There currently some awesome deals on 26" full suspension bikes. I can get anything from a Giant Anthem, Specialized Epic Comp to a Yeti ASR5 close to my budget. These bike have good to great components (XT etc) and usually have pretty decent wheels (Crossmax). They are also pretty light for Full Suspension (sub 12kg). It is the most logical choice for fun and value for money. Only issue is , I have never felt that in control on any of my MTB's (various makes and sizes) . I always had this feeling of going over the handlebars in technical sections. It might have been my setup, lack of skill or way to much speed due to misplaced trust on my skill! But it has pointed me to the 29er bible of bigger buy -> bigger wheel mantra.....Honestly I think the 29er thing is a bit over hyped , in the end you still need to peddle the bike, and no wheel will change that. But just maybe........................it is the answer to all life's questions... ;-) 2) So...onto the 29ers, in my budget I can get a entry to mid level 29er hard tail. I can get a Momen 329 for 8k new, 2013 spec. Also looked at the Titan Comp bike for 9300 odd, momsen 329 , 2014 spec for 10k. Bikes seem nice, components is a bit low level, but might be sufficient for the limited time I will put on them. For some reason I just think the bigger wheeled bike will fit my frame and length better, but it might also be the Achilles heel......I am not sure if these bike's wheel sets can handle my weight? no use going 29er and me folding a wheel on the first out the saddle climb and bit of pressure I put on the wheels.......also they are hard tail.....still think FS will kick any HT on a bit of ruff stuff! they are heavy ...12.5kg + , so no gains on weight versus the 26er FS. So I guess it comes down to getting a 30-50k bike at a real Steal price.....or buying into the hype and getting an semi-entry level bike 29er and then preaching to all about the awesome rollover ability ...............It is just very confusing....as soon as I choose I walk into a bike shop and see a 29er and start wondering ......damn marketing people! I must say I am leaning towards option 1, can someone convince me otherwise?
  18. So I'm looking at spending R10K on a hardtail 29er and came across the Momsen AL329. The 2012 spec looks awesome value for money, but the 2013 spec is quite different in comparison. Anyone own a 2013 Momsen AL329 or have anything to say about it? Thanks guys.
  19. Hi All, In search of some advice. I'm looking to buy a used Momsen SL929. I am 184cm tall with regular build (93kg). The bike I'm interested in has a 17" SL929 2013 frame. It is going for a good price and it will be hard not to accept this offer. As this is a second hand buy there will be no oppurtunity for me to fit the bike to my specific needs. If there is anyone out there who can answer this question please do: Will a 17" SL 929 frame fit me??? Regards, Derik
  20. Need some help in choosing my first mtb - All XL 29ers, hardtails under R8K. I am 6ft3 and quite a big fella. My options are: Momsen AL229 for R7,500 Mongoose Meteore Competition for R6,700 Merida Big Nine TFS100 for R7,000 Any advice or tips would be appreciated!
  21. Howzit, I am looking to upgrade to a 29er HT, and can't decide between these bikes. Any advice out there?
  22. Hi I have been looking at bikes for several weeks and have narrowed it down to 3 bikes. Momsen 329 (new) Silverback Vida 1 (used) Corratec Superbow Fun (New) All 3 have similar components. SRAM 5x/7x or Shimano Deore/SLX. I did not look at the wheels or shocks. Prices are between R8k and R10k. I have seen good reviews for the Silverback, but could not find any for the Corratec. Which one would you buy?
  23. Hi all, I know this has been asked a million times but since a lot of the 2014 models are coming out this might be useful info for others as well. I am looking at getting a new mountain bike and after a lot of investigation I decided to go for a 29" or maybe a 27.5". My budget is <R10k and I had the following models in mind: 2014 Merida Big 7 300 2014 Merida Big Nine 300 2014 Titan 29er Comp 2014 Momsen AL229 The Titan has a Rock Shox XC32 Silver Solo Air Fork and the Momsen a Suntour SR XCR AIR HLO 100. The Merida's either mention the SR 29 XCM HLO 100 or the RST F1rst Air not sure which one they have. Momsen has SRAM X5 Derailleurs while the others have Shimano SLX / M390. Tektro HDC 300/301 brakes except for the Titan with Shimano M430 brakes. What do you think?
  24. Hi guys I need a lot of help. I am looking at purchasing a 29er for social riding at the beachfront and the occasional sugarcane dirt road. As I am brand new at this I have done some research but still confused as to what brand to buy. I am looking at the Momsen AL129, giant revel 0 or the Titan trail. Please may I have your thoughts on the above. Please bear in mind that I am a BIG boy..
