Rocket Rons vs Conti Mountain King

I currently run Conti Race /Mountain King on my Scott. Was at my LBS yesterday. Took a mountain king and put it on the scale, thereafter a Rocket Ron on the scale. If I change to Rons I will save 330 grams weight on my bike. That is frikken scary. A moer of a lot of weight difference in the two brands. I love my Conti combo but I reckon its time to give uncle Ron a go. Anybody running Rons?

Conti. Weight trumps sitting in the bushes dicking around with a noodle and spike, any day. In Africa, you need that extra weight...

Very True, My Conti's have never ever punctured and they have been in a few hardcore situations

I've been training and racing on Rocket Ron UST's for about 4 months without a problem. Really like the way they handle too. A few guys I know running tubeless on the Tubeless Ready Rons have had a few puncture issues.

Jip both UST

Thats a massive weight difference, wonder whats been sacrificed to get them so much lighter. Is tubeless ready a full UST though, Ive been made to believe that tubeless ready is not a UST tyre

I had Race Kings UST at 700g a piece on my bike, and I replaced them with Specialized Renegade Control 2Bliss which is 500g a piece. A weight saving of 400g! Also used Rockets in the past, they are light, but as intern is saying, they do not offer great protection. Heard that the Spez Renegades are not only light, but also tuff, so I gave it a try.....so far they are great!

What I did notice was that the sidewalls are very thin

i run the white rocket rons (tubeless conversion) on my scott genius...and up until yesterday had 6 months of puncture free riding.

BUT as discussed at length in a previous thread....they do not have the greatest sidewalls.

I did a jump on Jonkershoek downhill, ended up going off the gravel into a "braambos" and cut my sidewall.

So yeah, its great for weight saving, money saving and looks. But i think i will get contis today or tom.

I have purchased and weighed 3 UST Racekings in past few months 740 745 and 745 thats for the 2.2 (not even close to the claimed 700)

UST Mountain king 680 and 685 also in 2.2

Race king protection 585 in 2.2 (you can really feel the diff when holding this in one hand and the UST in the other)

I cant really work out why the big discrepancy in weight UST to protection on the Raceking compared to the small diff on the mountain king

About to start riding the protections from this weekend so will see how they go

Mountain king protection 640 in 2.2 surprisingly only 40g lighter than the UST version

Just to confirm this are 2bliss & tubeless ready the proper full UST tyre or just added sidewall protection. Im confused as hell now.

Recently started running a Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph front/rear combo to replace my Mountain King/Monorail combo. Both UST and saved just over 200g on actual weight, i.e. not what the box says. Tyres seem to vary vastly in weight, not just by brand or model, but 2 of the same model will differ up to 30g in my experience. E.g. spec weight for a 2.25 UST Ron is 665g, but mine weighed 696g.

That Mountain King 2.4 is great but at 800g its pig. Changed to 2.25 Rocket Ron up front (I would not suggest anything narrower) and 2.1 Racong Ralph on the rear. Very happy with the Ron so far, but would not run it on the rear. Ralph has had some bad luck - put a 1 inch tear in the sidewall at the Voortrekker Monument race when it had less than 100km on it (well p*ssed I was!), but I think on that trail you risk cutting any tyre.

All around very happy - Ralph's slide in the wet (what doesn't), but pretty predictable.

Pricey though - buy online through CWC else you'll be coughing way worse than Conti from what I've seen.

I have gone from a Raceking UST+ Maxxis monorail(foldable-converted) to a Spez Fastrack +Shauserwind combi, both 2Bliss (specialised's recons that UST's standards are to thick sidewalls so they have their own) Its not as thick as UST but saves a bit of weight.

they are not 500g but they are just below 600 each, ant Ive had no trouble in the 500km Ive been on them.

I hears someone say the Schwalbe tires wear fast, but they are popular on threads, so cant be that bad.
