Motor Oil is a disaster, pics up loads of dirt which will erode your drivetrain. Use a cycling specific product. I use squirt, works great, also had good results with White lightning. You also need to keep the chain clean, and reapply regularly, overapplication will also get dirty.

Must disagree, think squirt is the largest load of shyte I have ever used on my chain. I'm using the Motorex stuff at the moment and works for me.

White Lightning - I wash my bike once a week and then lube once its dry.  That's it - works ok for me.

Gone back to using plain old oil and is working fine.  Probably better than Squirt.  You don't need much and it keeps the drivetrain quiet.  Have ridden in dust, rain and mud recently and not had any issues.  Wax based lubricants don't seem to handle the wet that well.  On the MTB I replace the lube after washing my bike as the chain gets washed at the same time.
