converting geared to single speed

Ok, so I have been wondering how to do this, how it would work, with the FC round the corner.

You are on a trail far from home, and something goes wrong with the RD, or the cables or whatever.

How do you convert your geared bike into a single speed while on the trail so you can get you home ?

First select the gear you want to limp back with. Shorten chain to the correct length or just one link longer (If you can still thread it throught the rear derailer this will be good (Granny is your friend)put rear wheel back on bike, set the higher/lower limits on the derailer so the chain woun't jump, cycle slowly out of trouble.

Cable ties? Surely you would simply "fix" the RD in place, so as to not allow it move/change gear?

I don't know... going to shut up now, and wait for someone who's actually had to do it! :P

If your RD is buggered then you may have a problem. It will also matter on what type of full susser you are riding.

 cable ties .... ssssshhhtt!

rather shorten the chain and dont take it through the rear derailleur, easier option.

if your RD is stuffed, or you break your RD hanger .... how do you do this ? How do you get the straight line so the chain does not jump around ?

BB you still know a thing or two :D . You would only really need to do this if the RD breaks for whatever reason . Front derailure failure is not a train smash you just will have to do with the small blade . Did the last 20km of Lourensford with no RD .

Take enough links out, if the chain is short enough it should not jump around.

As BigBen said go for middle in front and middle back.

Dont try 44/37

Oh when the RD hanger is broken, then you can use RodTi's cable ties to tie the Rd to the frame :D

Or loosen the cable and take if off completely. Then you would not scratch your frame or end up with broken spokes when the RD swings into the back wheel!

Don't forget about "chain growth" on a full sus... everything may end in tears if you rip your drop off, off your frame

Slowbee. You just dumped on your Karma dude!

Why even think of it? Shuure as **** to break now!

Shorten the chain. Keep your chainline as straight as possible. Lock out your SHOCK (rear thing).

Ride your (semi) hardtail home.

Dangle does HT SS with rigid FF and no RD or FD, or cables or WHATEVER.

Enjoy the Karma. :D

so you guys saying a dualie cant be made into a SS if you loose your RD ?

Yes you can but your chain might jump of if you are unable to lock ur rear shock and you hit a bump , but it still beats walking back .
