Watching it again now and having all the lap times available the call makes even more sense. Have a look here:

http://macofan.com/en/index.php?page=chart&gp=926&graf=3&dr1=Lewis%20Hamilton&dr2=Nico%20Rosberg

From Lap 42 Ros was closing the gap to Ham at anything from 2 – close to 7 tenths of a second. Then laps 51 (when the first call came via TV feed) – 53 he loses around a tenth per lap to Lewis. Laps 54 & 55 before Ro’s stop os lap 56 they were very evenly matched.

I’m sure Merc was thinking let’s get Ros out of the dirty air and in a position to even further close the gap to the leaders at that stage.

Then when all the dust has settled after all the pit stops he will be in a position to chase them down for a victory. So they were aiming for the win with Lewis 3rd or 4th. Not a bad call for the team, but not the best for ONE of the guys fighting for the championship.

In hindsight they should’ve known BEFORE the race that they maybe do not need to baby sit the manufacturers championship and in theory should be able to let the guys race each other for the rest of the season.

I understand both sides.

As an after thought: Rosberg was told Lewis was going to let him through. Asking about it on the radio didn’t to me sound like he was demanding or moaning.

But, let the 2nd half of a great F1 season roll on and let’s hope it’s as good as the first half.

Bernie did suggest some time back that tracks should have waterspray systems installed, which randomly be turned on to wet the track... needless to say it wasn't adopted.

I llked the idea of a circle installed into a straight, which the drivers could go around any way they chose!! That would liven things up a bit

Yes true, the difference between my comment and Bernie's is mine was in jest - Bernie was deadly serious.

Yes and comments from both Toto and Lauda seem to suggest they realise that in hindsight the call to let Rosberg pass was the wrong one.

I am actually very impressed with Merc management on the whole. They have given their guys far more rope than most to race and fight it out fair and square. They certainly don't have to worry about constructors points so why the heck not. What they will get which RB and Ferrari in the past lost then is goodwill from the fans in addition to lots of wins.

But they are in a position to do so... I agree with it to let the drivers settle it on the track. But I wonder if they would have been doing this had they not been so dominant and in a full-blown tussle with another team or driver for the championship and every point could make a difference... and potentially holding up your team mate on a different strategy could at the end of the year hand the title to the other driver.

Slightly off topic, but man... I really enjoyed Rally Finland highlights last night. Unreal driving!

Would love to see more manufacturers back in WRC - maybe VW showing that success can be obtained will be motivation for somebody else to enter as well.

Toyota is developing a GT86 which they've said will be for a 2017 entry, but they ran it in Finland and there will be one for Germany as well.

Then there's TMG developing a GT86 as well. Can't remember the details, but here's a pic

Saw an interview where head of motorsport at Porsche said if the board turned down their LMP1 plan they would've gone F1 racing. Imagine that?

Hopefully we'll see one of the VW/Audi brands in F1 sooner or later as engine supplier. They have strong links with Red Bull in all their other motorsport ventures.

Remember these:
