Quite a few years back before I took a break from cycling I did lots of base training one December, I did this for the whole month and was my strongest ever when the road racing season started. Fortunately it was a quiet month at work and there were a couple of other guys to ride with.

I understand that I will be much stronger and that is why I am committed to do base training, but someone told me last night that if I don't do long runs (as per your example) the only thing I will accomplish is getting unfit. As I don't have the partners or the time on weekdays for 3- 4 hours sessions am I wasting my time with 1 hour sessions?

Any time in the saddle is good but for 1 hour sessions I would put in more effort/speed than if I was doing long rides

you cant do base at 60% for a hour and expect you to get stronger on a 100km ride for a 100km ride you must do 4hours base to get the time in the saddle, and to get your body ready for the time that you want it to race.do base on weekends

IMO Base training is Prepairing yourself for more strenious "Build" phases that come therafter. It gets your body use to being on a bike before you go rip your thigh muscle doing sprints up kloofnek.

So For us mortals, Just go ride your bike, I'd say dont go to hard, but FFS turn of the HR monitor- Cadence sensor etc etc.. Enjoy the riding, If you take BASE so serious youll be burnt out by the BUILD 2 phase which is way more intense and there missing a session could throw out a weeks training. So yes, Just pic up your riding, go ride 2hrs after work insted of one, join a group sat and sunday for a 3-4 hr ride..

The longest rides I did before the Argus was 1:50 (41 km twice per week), but I did ride at an average HR of around 80% for the whole distance, so it could be looked at as a long sprint  . I did sprints and two hill climb sessions, which were always around 60-90 minutes. I did not do a magnificent Argus time, but I finished strong, running the last 6 km at around 40 km/h, just because I could   The hills were tough on me ('cos I am fat  ), but not at all impossible.

I agree with Bos, on the sprints I tended to adhere to my HR monitor, mostly because of the purpose of the exercise. When I am out on the road though it becomes a reference only. I have the added blessing of being able to recover very well from extended time in the lactic zone without any after effects. My ride last night was a 35km ride, with average HR of 174 bpm (Max HR is 185). Maybe it is just the way my body got used to cycling.
