Hi guys

I am currently riding a 2009 anthem x1 with mavic 317 tubeless wheels. I have read quite a bit on the hub that suggests upgrading wheels makes a sizable difference to performance.

If i upgrade to something else, what should i be looking at and also what sort of practical difference will i feel or notice. As a single day (30-60km rides), non-competitive rider (compete with myself as opposed to looking for a podium position!) is there any point in looking at an upgrade from what i currently have?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated as always.

Mavic 317 is not tubeless. It can be converted with tape and rim strip but it is not true tubeless. Like the others have asked, why upgrade. If you have trouble with hubs/rims/spokes then yes change, but you will have spend about 5k to feel the difference and then you will probably also only sit with converted wheels. True tubeless wheels like some Mavics and Shimano apparently has freewheel problems (nothing to do with being tubeless) so then you open another can of worms.

No current problems at all. Just asking the question, but it seems as though there is no real reason to think about it. If i am not going to see significant improvement then no point.

Thanks.

WHat do you mean by true tubeless? I have 317 and converted them tubeless with strip and they have been perfect. How does a true tubeless wheel differ from non true ?

True tubeless wheels don't need tape/rim strip....just a valve. Essentially the "true" tubeless rims(like XT and CB Cobalts for example) should seal perfectly with just sealant and tyre.

Thanks for that didnt know there was a difference. Another tech question. How do the 317 mavics rate compare to say the 817 or xt rims etc

Don't bother with other wheels. It is like your car. What benefit will new mags give you? Ziltch.

H'of course couzzie, if you go with 'doze Hamerican Classics, you get BLING boss. Like a Chatsworthian Corsa.

Lighter wheels will make a big difference. Big. Tests have shown a 7:1 ratio between rotational weight and...what's the other one? 7:1 between wheels and frame! Yeah, let's call it that. You're bike will pick up speed A LOT faster and usual pedaling, especially climbing, will require less effort.

Depends obviously on what you get. And that will depend on your budget.

(As a side-note: I agree that pimping rims on a car doesn't make any noticable difference, but surely you have to take into account the percentage of weight a rim is of a car's total. rolleyes.gif)
