Great post and pity you guys covered everything about people over speed limit and legalities of m5 etc. However made me think a little and JW good good for and yes it does sound like thastig was one of them, hhhmmm, anyways what I like about this thread is and I hope it is educational to everyone especially cyclist. Cyclist shoud be more alert on our roads, it doesnt matter where you ride. If it was for a car there would be no tar roads, Cars first everyone else later is my philosphy, how long does it take a car to stop, or how quickly does a car come past you. Would it have killed these morons to wait for the road to clear, a matter of seconds, then cross it??? I hope everyone now realises what it takes for a car to stop, more or less what is going thru' a drivers head, I am sure some people would not have slowed down. I mean really do people think they out gun a car, why do morons try crossing in front of one anyways, is it because they believe they are faster? I think its an ego thing, like the saying goes live by the gun, die by the gun

my standard reply to non cycling family members and friends who vent their frustrations to me because of stupid riding habits cyclists and mtb riders is "count to ten and exercise a bit of patience or drive over them and have a case of culpable homicide opened up against you, take your pick".

ccc2 ill take option 2, im tired of cyclists moaning that they get run over, but then they ride smack damn in the middle of the road.

Case in point open bicycling mag May/June issue and open page 42 and 43 and tell me whats wrong with that picture.

Geez, i haven't read Bicycling since the CNA closed down in Voortrekker Rd, Bellville in 1999. what's up? enlighten me.

With you on that one :) though was at harkerville camping this weekend and needed some entertainement inbetween single track heaven, in short a a training section on hill training up prince drive, with a foto of a roadie smack damn in the middle of the road, with a nice shoulder that could be used.

Some car comming around a corner at 80-90kmh there will have three choices,

1 swerve left and go of a cliff,

2 go straight and crush the cyclist

3 swerve right into a mountain,

once again im sorry option 2 is the most viable with the least amount of risk and damage to ME and my car.

ja , you are right , not clever. use the damm hardshoulder if there is one but like i advised (my friends and family) you as the motorist have the choice.

That bit of road is an access (escape) road from Pinelands - can't blame the cyclists for acting a bit crazy - could have been a few oldies forgetting where they are or a newly married couple punch drunk in love.

Also it's a public holiday - what are you driving for? Use your bike!

Riding on the M5 is NOT illegal, it is NOT a freeway. Check your facts, mate. Seriously. It may not be clever, but it is not illegal. This has been debated many, many times on the hub.

Which makes the rest of your comments idiotic.

I'll take your word for it, and stand corrected.

The rest of my comments are, however, very reasonable:

Killing a cyclist is not something I want to do because it will make me feel ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE for years (perhaps forever?). I'm not sure I'll ever be able to sleep peacefully knowing that I killed someones's innocent child, or father or husband. Even if it was not my fault! That's why I drive responsibly and obey the rules. When I cycle, I do the same.

Perhaps if some cyclists have a death wish and insist on riding where they are in huge danger, cycling should not be allowed on the (very freeway like parts of the) M5?

I think you might have a problem with your eyes (see my post), to repeat... no I was not one of the individuals in question. I gave my 2c as I've said it is easy to talk the talk but when your bluff is called and you have to put those words into action..then the consequences could be unpleasant. If the post read differently like; Motorist follows and assaults cyclists in road-rage altercation

which could have happened if JW had actually found them when he went looking for them. I am sure you would be singing a different song then. I agree, he reacted well to avoid taking them out and anyway it would be interesting to get their view on the incident. You will most probably find that they suffered a "brain-dead moment" by not thinking their actions through; mistakes happen they survived, JW got to test his ABS and defensive driving and we all learnt from this post.

I drove the M5 from the Koeberg interchange Southwards this morning. From after the roadworks where the speed limit changes to 100km/h, it is a FREEWAY with FREEWAY signs at every onramp. I assume it stops being a freeway somewhere South of Ottery.

THEREFORE IT IS ILLIGAL TO CYCLE ON THE BULK OF THE M5

I am glad you avoided the cyclist, you would have really felt bad if you knocked him even accidentally.

It sounds like the cyclists were definitely in the wrong in terms of just being aware of the surroundings, and traffic. cyclist versus car, we all know who is gonna win.

I ride on the M5 occasionally into work, when I do ride on it in the mornings, the cars are usually standing dead still all the way from Kromboom turnoff (Where I join the M5) all the way to the turnoff for N2 where I duck onto Liesbiek Parkway.

I am not making any excuses for the cyclists riding the M5, I know when I ride on this road it is dangerous and only do it in peak hour morning traffic when its pretty much grid locked, its actually safer then than the main road that has the Taxi's.

Why must Jarek defend himself?

That cyclist was cycling badly regardless of where he was.

We really need to be aware of our actions out there ladies and gents.

small world! those 2 wankers rode with me and some friends. they are friends of a newbie that went out with us to camps bay. we met them in sea point on our way back home. we rode home together until they split with us at klipfontein road. the newbie lives pinelands way and i think they wanted to escort him closer to home. I agree, thats a stupid move to join the M5 against the traffic. they should of followed us around the common, and take milner road to kromboom and then join M5. i will make an effort to pass on your messages if they are not hubbers.
