My friend wants to put on slicks on his mtb to train on the road. Some people say you then need to replace the tubes as well while others say it is not necessary and you can use the original tubes. Is it necessary to buy 'special' tubes?

New tubes . If he gonna put slick on he will most probably try and fit the thinnest stuff he can find that will fit and that means his normal MTB tubes will not be suitable .

I'm also thinking of putting on Slicks on my mtb. I mostly ride on road and a little off road

1) Do I get full slicks or semi-slicks?

2) What brand and model and retail price?

I love my Maxxis Wormdrive tyres for the road and hard paths. They also last for ages. They are semi slick tyre.

They are 580gr for the wire bead, but are only 1.90 wide. They are pretty cheap, you also get them in UST.They are very fast on tar

They were about R160 or less

Are they much lighter compare to normal mtb tires and how much did you pay?

Do you move a lot faster?

I think it is better to change the tubes.

It makes life easier.

I use a Kenda Slick with 26x1.25 tubes.

Do you only ride on tar?

I loved my Continental Town & Countries, 1.90 so not a true slick but at least I used the same tubes. Tough as nails and when I puncture a massive hole on the road (think it was a large nail/screw) the tyres stayed on the rim and I was able to safely stop (I was doing 50km/h on a downhill)

how's the tires cornering on downhill? do they hold well?

I have Schwalbe Speed Cruiser tyres from CRC (+/- R120 each) and they are really fast. I used the normal cheap MTB tubes without a problem.
