Yip, CRC adds VAT to the order total for orders to the EU. It's 19% for Germany, though, not 20%.

When the goods leave the EU, you will be able to claim back the VAT, but will be charge VAT upon your entry into SA.

I got the VAT back on an RC Car that I bought in Germany.

Isn't it a bit of a ballache though? When I tried that in the UK, they wanted some specific from that you can only get from certain retailers. Of course, maybe the Germans are just more efficient.

I will be in Erlangen for the first 2 weeks in August. I think there are 2 cycling stores there that I will for surely go and visit.

It looked like high end stuff like Bulls, Ghost etc that they sell...Will see when I get there.

Most likely they'll be Freilauf just up the road from Mickey D's on the Fussgaengerweg in the middle of town or Schirmer Eberhard quite a way out (south) on Nuernbergerstrasse. Both pretty damn pricey in my experience but worth a look anyway. There are others but if I recall they were the best ones.

Do yourself a favour and catch cab out to Stadler Zweirad Center in Fuerth, about 15-20min cab ride. Its the biggest bike shop in Germany, maybe even Europe and worth checking out - they've got from XX/XTR to Sportman's Warehouse-type crap, but I'm sure you'll find a bargain or two there. Don't try find a train or bus to get there, there isn't (or wasn't) one, just pay the high cab fair and call another to fetch you when you're done. I'm sure you'll make up the fare price in savings and more. Look for their website first though to see if they've got the stuff you're looking for.

PS. There are lots or beer festivals around that time of the year, so try find one in one of the small towns around there, you won't regret it. Far better than the bloody Oktoberfest any day... and much cheaper.

I find CRC a lot more expensive than the German/Dutch sites lately (maybe because of the weak Euro?). Not the bargain it once was

I see Canyon has some very good prices on there site on 2010 frames ;)

there is a simple customs document (either green or white, they are the same) you can buy at any stationary shop in Germany. this is for export of goods into non-EU countries. when you buy over the counter, give the document to the shop owner and let him fill it in. you fill in your details and when you get to the airport (before checking your luggage) , go to customs and let them stamp the document. post it back to the shop and they will refund you the 19% vat. post it from the airport if you have time, otherwise do if from SA. don't let SA customs see the document as it shows the true value of the goods. a German account for the refund is best.

by the way, bike spares are duty free. buying online and getting it sent by post, there is a duty free limit of R300 only, (R3500 if you come in on a plane). you will always pay the vat on any declared amount, even if there is no duty payable. factor that into your calculations.

Hi all,

Sometime from mid July to mid August I'm in Neutraubling, Germany.

I was wondering whether anyone of you know of cycling shops (in and around Munich) or online cycling shops that will deliver anywhere in Germany.

Specifically looking for MTB components

Thx in advance

Bud CANYON !!!!!!!

There are plenty of online shops in Germany. A number of them has been mentioned already - the easiest thing is probably if you get a Bike or Mountain Bike magazine in Germany on your arrival (available for example at any petrol station). In there you'll find way to many online shops which you can browse then.

Depending on which bike shop you go to the shop might have a larger choice for commuter/trekking bikes than the purely MTB or road bike choices. However there are also more than enough shops that will satisfy your needs, just depends on where you are. the shops in bigger cities usually have more stuff for the recreational rider.

Stuff in shops in Germany is a bit cheaper than in ZA (also depending on the exchange rate) but the online shops are certainly dramatically cheaper than in ZA.
