Hey Guys first thing you should know I'm a fairly new rider and have come from a Mongoose Tyax (Nic: the Whale)

I'm turning 21 in Jan 2012 and like any other guy I'm searching high and low for what I want....

1 problem! There's so much and I don't know which to choose, but hopefully with your help I'll be able to make up my mind!

I'm 2.02m tall and 90 odd kg, I'm a stronger rider that prefers torque to cadence...

I have an approximate budget of R16 000 and I have 2 trains of thought, buy 2011 at reduced price, or get a 2012 new?

The 2011 29ers I'm considering:

1) Trek/GF X-Caliber (not sure on pricing)

2) Giant XTC 29er

3) Felt nine race (not sure of pricing again)

4) GT Zascar elite 29er

5) Fuji 29er... Not sure wat its called

Hoping by chance to fall into my range:

6) Trek/GF Paragon

7) Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 29er

I'm sure that this will become a whorehouse of opinions, but if possible please say why you'd choose "A" over the rest...

Note I'm still a student so I want to keep it for a few years...

Look at silverbacks segma. article in bicycling mags last issue testing 11 of them.segma is very well specced with shimano tenspeed, reba fork, and stans rims. its nice because at some stage you can if you want throw it onto a better frame such as a Niner (EMD frame R6250) the silverback is i think around 17-18k and is definately worth the extra lil bit.

The stock of the Segma's seems to have dried up with little hope of extra stock coming in. On another forum a guy spoke to the silverback agents and that the story! But saying that all Silverback bikes offer real good value and are spec'ed the best for the price point.

At R15 or R16k, I reckon the Giant is a very good option. I like the Fox QR15 fork and tapered head tube. It makes a good platform to upgrade from.

I would however suggest that you get properly measured up before you buy and get a frame whose geometry that suits your build.

According to Bicycling magazine the giant was nasty, it doesnt say it in the mag but i spoke to three of the six testers and they said it wasnt a nice ride. Giant arent very clued up on 29ers yet but with time im sure they will get it right.

I have tested an xtc myself and the Giant wheels are seriously heavy, a very important part of the bike to have light.

That would have been my suggestion too. Have a look at the Momsen range. They have a BEAUTIFUL SL929 Carbon frame available.

SL729 also coming out soonish. Consider buying either as a frame set to suit your price range

Another option would be the Momsen AL329.

They are in your price range, and can also be easily upgraded.

I see that Momsen is launching a AL529 in the next two months as well.

ZTR Crest rims, XT/SLX groupo with a Reba fork. An I think it will be in you price range if I take a look at how well their other bikes are priced

Sorry, I have to reply to this. Of all the reviews that have been done by many magazines all over the world, only the SA Bicycling gave it a less that stellar review. You should read the reviews from MBUK or Bike Radar.

The fact the the test rider owns a 29'er specialist store and isn't a Giant dealer, might have had some influence on the final review?

Yup..the AL529 is coming...advertised to be launched in Aug 2011. I see that they have some new accessories coming too...including 29er rigid fork

I was surprised when I read that review on the XTC 29er... If Giant improved on the wheelset I think that the review would have been very different.

I agree with Ghostface, every other review has been complimentary.

The XTC frame must be one of the best alloy Hardtail frames in existence.

to say Giant isnt clued up on 29er designs is completely un true - the the XTC composite 29er is carbon and I reckon going to be an awesome bike - all bikes come with "something" that needs to be upgraded, and in this case does not mean they(the wheels) wont do the job., but we digress...to answer your question u need to try ride a few of them and then decided, personally I would go with the Giant
