I received a photo of one of the alleged bike jackers that was caught near the Pinedene station yesterday, and have printed copies and issued them to all my guards.

As the person has not been convicted of the alleged crime that he is alleged to have perpetrated, his identity may not be disclosed, and pictures/photo's may not be published.

I however feel that by giving a photo of the alleged offender to the guards, they may be able to identify known accomplices (read friends) of the alleged offender, and enable us to identify these alleged accomplices, find out where they live, and act pro-actively to stop the spate of jackings before someone is killed.

One of my guards lives at Pinedene, and I have tasked him with trying to identify the alleged bike jackers, and attempt to find out where they live.

The guard in my employ has been withdrawn from the site where he previously worked, and is now being redeployed to the route/s that cyclists often take.

I would like to challenge every security company to do the same, and post at least 1 security officer on known cycling routes.

By having ears/eyes on the ground we may start making a difference.

I hope that by using the word alleged I have not offended the rights of the individual, as he is still innocent until proven guilty.

the only way this is going to stop is if the thieves are caught quickly. the only way for that to happen is if a network gets up and running where members of the community can quickly respond to a theft, and by visiting 2nd stores and bike stores regularly. the bikes themselves need to be registered on a central database.

The cops on patrol are not detectives, and they cannot just drop everything to hunt for some missing bikes, they have to patrol as well as answer other complaints. the detectives themselves have rapes and murders to deal with, not too mention court dates and witnesses to track down, a bunch of overpriced bicycles are not going to hold their attention spans for any amount of time - and I for one don't blame them!

consider offering a nice reward for the return of the bike as well as information of the thieves, post the reward offer in the nearest township. put pictures up, you'll get a far better result than relying solely on the police and the hub.

My friend's bicycle is insured. Just want to spread the word and catch the thugs so that our fellow cyclist don't have to go through something like this. Twitter, word of mouth, the hub, Facebook, emails, etc. Use what ever is available to warn people. This is not your ordinary bicycle and someone is gonna buy the frame or perhaps the full bicycle if they are stupid enough. I wouldn't underestimate the buyers intelligence though as anything is possible with what they do with these bikes. Would have LOVED to know where that bike is right now and all the hands it's gotten through so far.

I'd love to hear from the vehicle tracking companies about technology that may be available that we can incorporate into our bikes to see where these jacked bikes end up. If we can put a man on the moon, surely we can track a stolen bike!

That and a seatpost device (read pipe bomb).....hey, one can fantasize....

Soon enough though, vigilante action will be taken and the cyclist protecting himself will probably end up behind bars.

Yes I totally agree. There is no way those guys are gonna use that bike themselves. That Specialized is in no way an ordinary bike. Someone is buying stolen bikes from these thugs and creating a market for stolen goods. Whoever is buying these bikes is well organized and probably has a distribution network going on. Someone MUST know something. Lets get these guys and sort them out.

I wonder if this is a case of the thief being within. This smacks of rhino poaching saga which unfolded a while back. Just a thought.

I got jacked a few weeks ago oalong the dirt rd that runs off London lane. It upsets me to see that they are now creeping further South. This is my area to ride and I can t always afford the time to head off to Van Gaalens, Teak, Northern Farm or Fountains.

It seems to be a repeat pattern but just the location that changes, so I am sure that with a bit of a plan they can be caught. It just takes willing participants..

Anyone keen?

DaveT, I'm very keen to help setup a trap to catch these bike-jackers without me trying to be a hero or someone getting hurt or loosing their lives! I want to ride my bicycle with the knowledge that these thugs are behind bars or too scared to attack cyclist. There are so many thugs out there, but any small number of them being caught will at least be small steps in catching some of them.

before you guys decide to hide in the bushes and jump all and sundry, start by attending the next cpf meeting in your area and voice your concerns there, or meet with the local crime prevention or better yet, the police reservists. spread the word our first, you'll be surprised just how much the local people positively respond.

I am doing just that. We have quite an active Plot Watch group in the Mnandi area and although the Blue Hills area is out of theor jusrisdiction I am pretty sure it is the same group of thugs who are just widening their area of operation.

Not good news for MTBing - Exactly 1 year since I was part of 5x MTBers bike jacked in Irene - Still debating riding with a firearm!

The motor industry shows very distinctive trends in vehicle hijackings. It appears as if this is the case with MTBing.

The good news is various various tracking companies are busy with R&D on bicycle tracking devices, however nothing commercially avail as yet. News so far is this year - hopefully this will help determine who is fueling these bikejackings.

Glad you guys are okay.

Hi,which tracking companies are doing R&D on tracking for bikes ?
