Mmmmmmm I now have this problem ....... an LBS in my area say they have a solution  - lets see what they can come up with :)

Failing that I have an almost brand spanking new Rockshox Recon TK silver 29r (in white) with 1.5 tapered steerer available - any offers ;)

Really cant see how any adapter is going to be allow you to fit a 38.1mm (1.5") shaft into a 28.8mm (1 1/2") orifice in a headtube without extensive frame modifications ie cutting off headtube and welding on larger one (miracles not withstanding)

Sorry about the quality of the pics but thanks to Graham at Cyclehub (Rietvlei zoo farm Alberton) - He was knowledgable and more importantly willing to go to the trouble of getting the part and helping to fit it. I spoke to most bike shops around JHB and it ranged from no never heard of it .... to heard about it but no idea where to get it. That includes most of the big as well as specialist shops around!

Okay, that is a tapered steerer. The original question is, can you fit a 1.5" non-tapering fork in a 1 1/8 straight head tube.

No you cant. The fork wont fit in the head tube .

Then why does a tapered fit with that external bearing cup? Can't they run an external for the top aswell?

From what I saw today you are correct sir, no reason why you can't use the same cup at the top
