Already the first Spaniard to win all three major Tours, Contador is one of only five riders in cycling history to pull off the so-called Grand Slam.

He is preceded by Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault of France, Eddy Merckx of Belgium and Felice Gimondiof Italy. Only 10 riders, including Contador, have won five Grand Tours or more.

He still seems to recon he won seven...

Yeah...

What is impressive is the Grand Slam feat.

Most stage race leaders focus only on Le Tour.

What a great tour this was, for me the best of the year, it had everything you could ask for and for me, 'Berto was a worthy winner.

It most certainly wasn't an easy win for him and I think he was pushed to his limits by both Valverde and Rodriguez, who, it has to be said, are in spectacular shape, but, he animated the race from the start, he rode like a tour leader, he attacked and attacked, he went on solo ventures, he chased when he could, he got irritated, he cried on TV, and best of all, he fought like a demon for his spot right up to the last meter. That, for me makes him a worthy winner of the fleece, and he can comfortably tick another grand tour off as "Job well done."

Bravo 'Berto,...Welcome back.!

Well Said!!!

I remember that.

They're good friends, apparently.

Paolo even had a Saxo bidon in his bottle cage to help 'Berto in the breakaway. I've never seen that before.

Got this cool 'Berto quote from Inner Ring:

I had an angel on one shoulder, saying “don’t do this, they’re going to roll you over” and a devil in the other saying “go for it”. On this occasion, I didn’t listen to the angel. It was attack or die.

Good points below about whether the Vuelta was the 'best tour of the year'.

Was this the best grand tour of the year? That’s subjective. The Vuelta had some stages that were worthy of a siesta but many that had you on the rivet of your sofa. The combo of route and the riders made it a close battle for two and a half weeks. Yet in hindsight for all the summit finishes, the early selection of four riders was repeated each day until Froome faded to leave three. Indeed Valverde’s crash on Stage 4 cost him more time than any mountain. And for all the terrible climbs and ten summit finishes it was on the mildest of climbs that Contador powered away from Rodriguez to win the red jersey.

@ X-Man,

Interview with Garmin-Cervelo's Talansky on Velonews:

VN: What are you impressions after racing alongside Contador?

AT: I have never done a race with him before. It was pretty cool to see. He commands a lot of respect in the bunch. It’s been interesting this season, because I’ve raced with Wiggins this year as well. When Wiggins is on the bike, he looks intimidating. He looks like a metronome, he’s so calm and in control. That’s how he won the Tour. With Alberto, you can see the way he rides with such passion. The way he attacks is like no one else. He’s got an instinct for the race. He’s a real bike racer. It’s been pretty cool to see him, Valverde, (Joaquim) Rodríguez. Purito (Rodríguez) had one bad day at a bad time, but he rode an incredible Vuelta.
