Oom, you'll know that old road that parallels the R21 from Olifantsfontein to Waterkloof.

It's decidedly stuffed at the moment, and what I am wondering, is how much of a beating it will take when the Tolls go live, and all the truckers start using this as the alternative?

I was once involved in a study done on why people use the alternative routes. It ranged from "the Boss does not want to give munny" to young people saying "my dad gave munny but we are going to use it to PARTY!"

Unfortunately this will happen. I do expect though that Metro's will place axle limits on these roads.

I went that route this morning, It's the M57. To say it's stuffed is an understatement. And I dunno how well an axle limit will work on it, as there are a lot of brick and cement concerns along there that will have no choice.

thats what i am not sure about - if so it should leave the transporters backsides ringing - and thats why i so 50 or 100k - but as i say that is way to open for birbery.

A few years ago there was a really dynamic head of spoornet (think she was voted business women of the year) and things were really looking up - i dont even think she lasted 1 year before she was snaffled up in the private sector

Maria Ramos. She didn't do anything, all she did was sell assets to make the books balance.

The smaller freighters will have no choice but to use the "B" Routes, large multinationals can up their price to account for tolls and retain profitability as their base is so big. Smaller truckers work much closer to the tipping point when it comes to pricing, so tolls become much more contentious and impact heavily on their margins.

In my opinion the b roads will become heavily used, not because its the preferred route, but due to cost.

The smaller truckers have been doing this for years already and you are right its only going to get worse if that’s possible. I have a good friend down there who falls under the “smaller trucker” banner and the only tipping point he seems to reach is when the weight of money tips over into his bank a/c.

Perhaps when / IF the “B” roads become totally africanised and a liability to their incomes then they will be forced to use toll roads?

I see this is how truck drivers react to law enforcement:

A trucker chased down for speeding on the N3 allegedly beat up and insulted two female traffic officers.

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers Ntombizodwa Magubane and Khanyisile “Nhlanhla” Dlamini were booked off duty after the attack on Wednesday afternoon.

Trucker Johannes Motsoeneng was arrested.

Dlamini said they were working at a speed trap near the Midway garage when Magubane flagged down the truck after they had clocked it doing 123?km/h in an 80?km/h zone.

Motsoeneng ignored their instructions and the two officers gave chase, pulling the truck off the road after a 5km pursuit.

When asked to produce his driver’s licence Motsoeneng allegedly refused to co-operate and was taken over to the officers’ vehicle.

“My colleague asked again for his licence and this time he produced it and threw it at her face. When told that he was speeding, he started throwing insults, calling my colleague a bitch and saying that she must not **** with him.

He started punching her repeatedly,” said Dlamini.

When Dlamini tried to intervene she was also called a bitch and punched repeatedly. She said the driver dragged her out of the vehicle and assaulted her.

She was allegedly pushed towards a passing truck, but she was not hit.

“As I was lying on the road I saw him coming towards me after breaking an empty bottle which he had picked up on the side of the road.

I lifted myself up and ran to the car and by then back-up was arriving,” Dlamini said.

edit: and the truck was overloaded.

Nottingham Rd has been trying for years to stop trucks using their roads to avoid the tolls. Those who should be helping see nothing wrong with trucks going there. A real change in mentality is needed.

not t mention the road deaths that are directly related to that on that stretch of road

didnt the locals operate a roadblock at one stage?

Do trucks in ZA have to undergo a regular road worthy? Probably not, hey? Get trucks to do a road worthy every two years. The worst trucks will be sorted out this way.

They already have to go once a year. Here is another shocker. The license for a 8 ton truck in the WC = R6000/year.

Without trucks our ecomomy will grind to a halt.

One of the American presidents once stated.

It it not our economy that grew our roads, but our roads that grew the economy. The state of the roads is not as a result of the trucks using them. They haven't been maintained - period.

There is nothing wrong with the N3 DBN - JHB, and it's the busiest truck route in Southern Africa.

The solution to keeping the scrap off the roads ? Anyone involved in moving product around the country, stop using Fly by night operators for the sake of saving a few cents. Mostly they are cheaper because they don't maintain their trucks, they don't pay their staff fairly, and they generally disregard most of the legislation that is supposed to protect other road users.

Skott, have you just woken up after your hibernation? Quess why the N3 is in such a good state, becuause it is maintained by SANRAL and Toll Concessions. SANRAL is responsible for the maintenance of all the N routes. Most of the funds for maintenance on the N3 are derived from tolling the route.

Our railways system which was once one of the best in the world was allowed to decay becuase capitalists could make money faster with unscrupolous trucking companies.
