32GI

Hi Guys

Committed one of the cardinal sins of racing this weekend at the Gravel Travel and tried a new supplement for the first time during a race. Tried 32GI for the first time and it did not go well. Read a lot about it and thought I would try it for the race. I mixed two bottles with two scoops each for the 3.5-4 hour race. Had half a bottle on the way to the race.

Went OK for the first 90 minutes until I took my first GU (as soon as I finished it, it occurred to me that this was probably not a good idea, as 32GI is low GI and GU is high in sugar for instant absorption and to produce an energy spike). 15 minutes later I hit the wall! As I wasn’t sure what to do to reverse this, I thought that I will revert back to my normal race strategy of bananas, Energade and bar-ones and stopped drinking the 32GI. Felt weak the rest of the race up to the 60km mark, when I got some life back.

Now the question. Can it be the combination of 32GI and GU that caused me to bomb for the first time ever (been cycling for 2 years, did the Epic, Sani, 2x Attakwas with no problems)?

Look forward to your comments.

By the way, my Chain-L lube worked GREAT in the muddy conditions!

I've been subscribed to this thread from early on, but halfway through page 2 it became apparent that it was just a very succesful viral marketing campaign and I took my hat off to one or two peeps managing 10 odd hub accounts asking questions and supplying feedback to keep the thread going.

But wow, to come on here to push your own product on the back of what must be the most successful hub marketing ploy ever, that is balls right there. Respect.

Did you even buy any 32GI? Or is the whole GU bonking thing a splash of jealousy because of their success at the marketing thing..?

But glad it worked so well, if is good enough for gearboxes, it should be GREAT for muddy conditions.

For me, I'll stick to squirt and Malto..

Hi there, Mark here, and to be honest I am the ONLY 32Gi guy on this thread, everyone else is either a user or lambaster, but we are here to answer and assist.

I am replying to Aapskomel on the low GI high GI question.

Race and training nutrition and even weekly meal nutrition can always impact you, it plays an extremely crucial role and when you go out and race you need to understand what you are taking in why and how.

32Gi is a low GI endurance energy drink it keeps your energy levels at a nice peak not a spike and then tapers slowly over a long period of time. So lets just take a look at setting your race nutrition. You take in a low GI meal you gain a little peak and you keep it there it then tapers off and of course there is no flood of glucose to the bloodstream and with 32Gi you have a duel effect of getting the glucose released slowly into the bloodstream as well as the promotion of fat store tapping as the second source of energy. The two of these together make for really stable session whether racing or training. Now the high GI product in your case you took a gel, great, BUT it does spike you, but then the spike does not taper, it drops very quickly, you then need to know how long this spike lasts and know exactly when to take in your next feed, miss that feed and you are toast you will hit the wall. To get out of hitting the wall, you need a glucose injection and 32Gi is of no use at this stage. Although the cause of the wall hit was that you actually changed your nutrition mid race, from a balanced and level energy supply to a boost and dip. You were on a level road and all of a sudden you climbed on the roller coaster and the problem was it was up and then you hit the bottom of the downer. just as a matter of interest 32Gi does not dip below the base after 2 hours, as compared to maltodextrin, which is a big plus.

There is a place for the gel, but you need to ensure you have that spike to the finish you dont want to peak to early and dip before the finish of the race. Timing is so crucial when taking in a high GI product. If you start with high GI you need to keep going with it. If you start with 32Gi you need to go with it, the minute you introduce the spike you need to keep spiking, depending on which gel you use, you probably need to consume on every 35-45 minutes, miss this window and you could hit the wall. If you are taking only 32Gi you need to only consume it within a 2 hour period.

The 32Gi chews or a Reds Low GI bars would have been a better option as a compliment to the drink.

Unfortunately you had a bad experience, but you really need to understand once you set your race nutrition at the start you need to stick with it, changing mid way can cause irreversible problems and you experienced on of them.

Hope this helps, play a little during training see what works best then take it to the race.

all the best

Mark, thanks for all the great info and I am a firm believer of this product. But re the Cullinan race. You filled up the public's bottles with 32GI and they went riding. Everybody feels good and suddenly they stop at watering point and drink a cup of Energade or take gel. Then they start feeling bad and they realise the only thing they did different is the 32GI you gave them. Don't you think it could harm the brand?

hi Mampara i agree with you 100% when filling up we do inform them of the sugar factor we also will focus on filling mainly existing customers or those that are doing shorter distances. I have personaly turned away many people based on just what they had as a pre race meal. We are trying to rather inform as, as you say i person could easily have a bad day but it could boil down to the day they used our product. We are careful to try and ensure its used correctly. At Cullinan most fills we did were actually after the event for people to take home and use on their next training rides , it does not go off so they took home in bottles put it the fridge and test on next training ride. But we do need to be more vigilant :-) thanks M

Just my 2c here as well:

Havent used 32GI in a race, only in training rides, and it really does make a difference, even if you try and push as hard as possible. After a tough climb it's as if my legs recover quicker. The first race test will be this coming Saturday.

MDW, The Dichems here in Centurion do stock the product, but would I have a better chance to get the chews at FPC?

Hi there,

Have tried 32gi and have experienced no adverse effects and want to try it this Sunday. I'm doing the Dome2Dome 40km. What would you recommend as a pre-race meal? I generally have a bowl of oats on the days that I race. The Dischem at Woodmead has the drink but not the chews. Where can I find them?

:D so we can look forward to good race report both from myself and from Gerhardc :D

Yip, and this will be my honest opinion...I am no undercover worker for 32Gi... :D :D :D :D Have a good race RudoJ....any batch numbers and times been released as yet???

@MDW tried the chews this weekend and they are easy to digest but please can u do something about the cosmetics and texture/gritty of those chews, they look like my dogs Chew treats and they stick together so it's difficult to seperate on a ride. That being said the chews work.

to answer all of you we can get the chews to FPC as Dis-Chem is not stocking them yet until our new packaging is launched tell Pierre and we will send him if you dont come right contact Sharon our ops manager on sales@32gi.com she will get you sorted. Ok next question pre race even if you plan on using a high gi drink keep the meal low on sugar your choice of oats is excellent other alternatives i have used and recommended are low GI bread with diabetic jam sugar free peanut butter a new cereal to the market is The Future Life range check them out great product range options as well. Hope this helps all the best Mark

I have been training with 32GI for the past 4 weeks with great results.

Rode the Lost City Classic 103km on it two weeks ago and felt very good.

I have been putting in 200kms every week on the stuff and have only been impressed.

We will be doing a charity ride to Amashova in October and will definitely be using it for the four days to PMB - how about a sponsored tub for each of the 20 riders Mark? <_<

I am very happy with the product.

(Sorry I dont have more than a few posts here for the pessimists)
