What are the best shoes to wear with flat pedals?

I know about 5.10's and sixsixone's, but don't want to spend R1k on shoes.

So what is the next best choice - shoe/brand? I guess it would be a skateboard shoe?

Duffs have rad soles (and designs) that last ages. I have no idea what you want to use them for but buy Duffs any way.

No expert but I would guess that you'll need something with a hard (read non-flexible) sole. In that case skateboard shoes won't cut it as it's not hard, at least it wasn't a couple of years ago.

And you'll be surprised at what the "proper" skateboard shoes cost, definately over R1k.

Bought some flat pedals for the pump and 4x track.

ok, so I know you already mentioned that you don't wanna spend a ton on shoes...

but seriously... 5.10's are worth every penny! Just about every dirt jumper and free rider I know that has made the switch from skate shoes (including Vans) to 5.10's has been amazed at how amazing they are...

...did I mention that they're amazing? I'm pretty sure 5.10's can curb global warming, find a cure for cancer, and stop unwanted in the stray dog population.

But yeah, on occasions when I forget mine and ride in skate shoes I feel somewhat nekkid... almost like not wearing a helmet. I think Cap once said that he'd rather forget his neck brace at home, than his 5.10's

So yeah... I know they're pricey (still not nearly as much as some guys spend on cleats though)... but you'll love them so much that you may find yourself riding flats more and more often!

Alternatively... here are some other flat (riding specific) options. Prices are CRC based without shipping and duty... but just to give you an idea.

Shimano AM 40's (they have Vibram soles, not quite Stealth Rubber, but still  )

You may be able to source them locally. But they have been superceeded by the AM 41's

Or the newer version

AM 41's (R610 on CRC)

or these

Shimano MP 90's

Again, not on CRC site, but I have seen local riders source them.

Nice one patches! Will try find those locally and price them.

Not worthwhile going through CRC with shipping and duties.

yeah, for sure! I bought some 5.10 Sam Hill editions late last year. CRC price was about R970. Had free shipping, but the with the duty on the shoes they ended up costing around R1500 <_< Still love them though.

Maybe someone at Cool Heat (the shimano guys) can get those in for you... Oh, and maybe take a look at City Rock (the 5.10 agents for SA)... I got a feeling pricing is similar to CRC, but you'll never know. (The Freerider seems to be the most reasonably priced).

But yeah... keep us posted on what you end up getting, and how they perform

The funny thing is, I cycled for 7 years with flats and swore that I would never go the clipless pedal route. And now that I've made the switch to clipless I can't imagine riding with flats again. Go figure. But me thinks me will have to revisit my roots again. Especially for stuff like jumping, 4x etc.
