Rhodes mem area - best time to cycle alone?

Hi all,

 

in light of various mugging incidences (although it seems to have been quieter the last month or so?), when do you think there's likely to be the most traffic at Rhodes mem round to deer park area? - presuming that more users means it'd be a bit safer at those times.

 

Obviously you can never say never, & I realise riding alone is not the way forward, but still - thoughts?

i commute through rhodes mem to vredehoek during the week and get to rhodes around 5:30-6:00, and the only soul i've seen on the mountain to date is a porcupine, i leave work around 4 and that's i think when the mountain traffic starts picking up.

 

Do yourself a favour and search for Table Mountain Bikers, kandui i think on thehub.

There used to be a zoo below Rhodes Memorial and we spent a lot of time up the mountain around RMem.

At night it was quite spooky sitting and listening to the lions roar and wondering if they can escape.

I think after dark is a good time.

Ha. Thanks for the thoughts - ninja gear sounds like a plan. Will investigate TM mountain bikers as a backup though

I ride during the week off peak (before 4pm) and never had a problem. Being attacked is as rare as being bitten by a shark off Fish Hoek. Don't be put off as the ride is worth it always

There's usually a reasonable amount of traffic there on a Wed afternoon (after 4:30pm) and on a Sat or Sun morning about half hour after sunrise.

 

I've also ridden there in the dark, and never seen anyone around. Probably not ideal though.

 

Also, if alone, try to avoid the heavily wooded areas (e.g. the climb directly above the TMNP offices).

Does anyone do regular rides in the evenings after work on Table Mountain from Rhodes mem? If anyone is in a group or knows of a group to join please let me know. I'm keen on doing regular rides preferably with company.

Pm Kandui. Yes there are several groups that ride regularly. The safety situation is also much improved.

I regularly commute through from Newlands to town, passing by there around 7ish. Only other souls I have ever seen early in the morning are other cyclists and joggers.

 

I personally think Long street is more dangerous in the middle of the day, I have 2 friends that have been mugged at knife point for the cell phones and wallets in the middle of the day.

Not too worried about the safety aspect, although its worth keeping in mind, but more have company on the odd ride.
