I was off the bike for 3 weeks and can definately feel a loss in fitness

Ai, udxcob, those 'come-back-to-form' rides are just hard, eh?

I've spent the last few weeks 'coming back' too... ;)

Some good answers, thanks.

I find that a few days - week break every 2 months seems to help me as my body gets tired and a full week or sometimes more helps me recharge.

This is definately true. Taking a full week off, especially after a race, really has a positive impact for me.

I guess it's similar to tapering down your training 2 weeks before a big race.

interesting although each okes is different

i find that doing a hard ride or run and doing one the next day makes me stronger, on the second day you will feel more tired

then you take 2 days of not one day, training like this just keeps improving my fitness

By taking 2 days of do you do nothing for those 2 days ?? (no training)

2 weeks in a sling completely immobile and you will SEE muscle degeneration in the shoulder of a well trained athlete. Saw it first hand with and injury this year.

i try and do 5 weeks straight, this is more with running and in the meantime i might do 2-3 times cycling,

then i race saturdays either by bike or by running , sunday i will do a long training session fter church, then i will take of 2 days

my next rainign session after this will be speed in running or climbing in cycling so you can recover slowly through the week while you do your other training

anyway, this seems to work for me
