For what you pay (assuming you are considering the Sora version), the bike is pretty good. Bicycling mag (or was is Ride) raved about its value for money when they compared a few entry level bikes. I cannot recall which issue it was though.

If you are considering the Tiagra version, my personal opinion is that you can do better for the price.

The Avalanche probably weighs about 11kgs. I bought the Avalanche Cyclone 5 years ago. It had a rather heavy steal frame and came in at 12.5kgs. The Stratus has an aluminium frame and slightly better wheels, so should be lighter.

Thanks Eugene. Where has Avalanche gone to? I had a Reflex that was stolen 5 years ago and enjoyed the bike very much. It was on the heavy side though, but ride quality was excellent. Did Avalanche close shop or were they taken over by another manufacturer?

They seem only to retail through Sportmans Warehouse nowdays. You don't see them in cycle shops anymore. They are imported by Dragons Sports (the Giant Importers)

rather go and look on this forums classified. You could probably get a better frame there, such as a Eddy Merckx, BH, litespeed ext. really anything over 9 kgs for a road bike classifies it as a training bike.
