Smoking and Cycling

Actually, that is exactly how it was for me. Hooked from the very first one! How do you keep teenagers from trying out even one? That is the question to ask and perhaps you have the answer since you are lucky enough never to have smoked.

Dunno. I tried one cigarette when I was a teenager. Tasted like ****. Didn't need to try another one to know I didn't want to smoke em.

Champix and all that is more a placebo effect in my opinion. My problem with these "stop smoking help agents" are that you start to expect them to do the hard work for you so when you crave you blame them for it...... Why does any person then start smoking again even when on these nicotine supplementary medication? Honestly the "drug" cravings are minimal..........

I tried to quit numerous times with gums and other stuff over many years and it did not work.....

Then on 1st of Jan 2012 I quit. I have now been clean for 4.5 months and honestly I don't crave at all. It is unbelievable. I thought this was supposed to be difficult.....

Here is how I did it (or still am doing it)...

You have to realise why you want to stop and it has to make logical sense to you, not the other people. I did it purely for health reasons. I smoked for 17 years. Why do I want to cough every 5 minutes? Do I really want to wake up with shortness of breath after a loooong night? It really sucks that guys who dont train nearly as hard as me outcycles me....

Since I have stopped my performance have gone backwards even more and I get "asthma" like attacks. Standing next to a braai fire also makes me suffocate - it is almost as if I am now more sensitive to any type of smoke than I was before...... This has motivated me even more. I have done a lot of damage to myself over the years. 50% of all smokers die due to a smoking relatede illness eventually (excluding unatural casues). I dont want to be one of them. Hopefully in another month or two I will start to recieve dividents in terms of performance

I stopped because I have "convinced" myself that it is not worth it. There is no going back ever......... The way I feel now I cannot believe it has had such a hold on me..... And yes I have had cravings once or twice (non nicotine) over the past few months but I just asked myself again the above questions and suddenly realised how stupid it is to smoke!

Ciggies / Nicotine are addictive...most smoker will admit it tastes hondnaai, cost money, its bad for your health and an incovenience. Same as a herion addict sticking a needle between his toes, I can't think of doing anything worse, but for the junkie its a great ritual, he/she actually looks forward to it. It takes one cigarette to trigger the receptors that will start the cravings, then you are as they say...hooked.

I started because it was cool, dropped the habit after my dad died from cancer...nuff said

The thing is though, what might not work for you will work for others, I don't think you can put it down to the placebo effect.

All I am saying is that your head needs to be right. Dont walk into a pharmacy and say "hey guys, I wanna stop smoking, please give me zyban".

You need to do the hard yards in your head. Sure if you really feel cravings use that mouth spray or suck on that lollypop but also ask yourself "why do I want to stop again"?

If the asnwer is not enough to withhold then you dont want to quit enough (in my opinion)

Ir get TNT1 to be your sponsor and give you a good PK everytime you crave!

I had my last cigarette (hopefully) on the 11th of November 2011 after 8 years of smoking. It was freaking difficult, and I stopped cold turkey.

Not saying it'll will work for everyone, but if you have an Android device, I found this app that helped motivate me not to smoke, here is the link. It just lets you know how your Respiratory system is recovering, how much you saving, how many cigarettes you've missed etc etc, It definitely helped me to stop smoking.

Thats the thing though, everyone is different and everyone will have different levels of willpower.

I agree it has to come from yourself.

I know I want to stop, without a doubt I do. If I need more help from the last time I stopped, so be it. My mind is certainly in the right place for stopping.

Good luck man. I dont know why I found it so "easy" this time.... maybe cause I was just gatvol for always trying and never succeeding. Maybe I finally felt a change in my overall health?? Try to find the motivation that works for you.... Maybe do it for someone else? Financial reasons? Health reasons?

There are other more hard core ways as well. I guess one can always visit a cancer ward for shock therapy...... Then there are people going the hypnotisation route........

So do I get to hit you still? Well, I'll have to use a proxy, cause I'm up here, but I can arrange that...

My motivation is that my mother has emphysema, and watching and listening to her is enough for me now. I had been looking at the hypnotising route as well. The last time I did stop was also through will power alone.

I'm hoping that this will be it for me. I will give Champix a go, only thing I have to lose is a bad habit.

Thanks for the support  , I'm going to go buy my Champix tonight and start stopping tomorrow. The last time I lost weight, just trained harder and drank loads more water.

It will help that my best mate who I spend most of my time is wanting to stop as well, so we can use each other for support.
