Class is permanent also comes to mind - recent performances stand out because they are fresh in our memories but in a few years time, with context, very few would disagree is was a cricketing hero for SA.

Lets hope he doesn't come back a hater suurgat like DC

He now has an Irish passport and is playing in Great Britain,

if he wanted to im sure he could make the Irish team in a few years once he qualifies.

Well then one of the best counties in the world are a bunch of idiots and they are paying him a massive salary to join.

We as Saffas are the only people that wouldn't want him in our team.

Stats don't lie,

only peoples opinions.

county cricket & cricket for your country, 2 different kettle of fish.

Lots of has beens get scooped up by the counties, even Ponting playing there.

Pressure is just too much for the country stage, more relaxed environment playing county cricket vs country cricket.

As for how they will replace him,

Elgar to take the opener roll with Alviro

AB to take the captaincy and QDK to take the gloves as a number 6/7

Problem is AP position is not that secure - although he batted well in the first innings.

Ponting never got scooped up,

he went and played there.

Smith was offered a massive contract and the option to end his International career,

small difference between the two.

As a captain,

he is the best the world has had for some time.

As an opener he is the best the world has had for some time.

Name one opening batsman who has consistently been in and around the top 10 other than Smith.

He is still right there as of today.

Agreed,

but doubt they will be too radical with changes.

lol nobody just goes & play county cricket, you need a contract.

I agree with all your points Smith "was" the best, past tense & that was my opinion before he retired.

Openers who were consistent Strauss when he played, Cook, bar the Ashes?

and again this is to his character...he wanted people to cheer him on as he steps out to bat at his home ground.........

and perhaps it is a last ditch effort for himself to salvage this game and produce a mammoth innings...if its his last knock perhaps he will concentrate like crazy to not go out

I'm calling a single figure score again.

Nice stats those,

93 average just 4/5 months ago in a series.

Misses the 60 plus against India as well.

i agree - in the last year he has got a double century 2 half centuries 2 knocks in the 40's (in 17 inns)

not his best...but not terrible either

I cant find fault with him as a player...maybe going through a bit of a patch...but still a masterclass.....but still a dick too

you just backed up my claim for me, not only his batting stats but his captaining style sucked as well which helped me formulate my opinion that he must go.

Straus was mentioned in the context of " in & around the top 10" rankings, please don't misintrepet my comment to suit you.
