so team announcement tomorrow.

big talking point seems to be

amla/markram/reeza - pick 2

# is the only one of the 3 playing CSA T20, has scored 61 runs in 5 innings at a 85SR

He does however have the most experience and best record of 1day cricket in the UK in the squad.

the allrounders seem to be

phehlukwayo and dwaine pretorious

chris morris has been doing quite well in the IPL

Vern, who has got no chance of going, has actually been smashing it in the lower order. If anything he's probably the best bowler for english conditions but that has never seemed to be a factor as Ottis wants pace pace and pace

wiaan mulder will have to wait for 2023

He starts, and has just taken his first ODI wicket.

It looks like the World Cup squad is just 15 players, so here is what I think they'll go for.

I think today's lineup is their chosen starting team, with JPD coming in for Reeza when he's fit.

Ngidi comes in for Beuran as the 4th seamer

Shamzi plays as a second spinner if it's a turning pitch (CWC pitches are done independantly by ICC this time around, so there will be some indian input there)

Q de Kock+(HKlaasen)Markram
HE van der Dussen
HM Amla
F du Plessis
DA Miller
JP Duminy
AL Phehlukwayo+(WMulder/DPretorious)
K Rabada
DW Steyn
Imran Tahir+(TShamzi)
L Ngidi+(BHendricks/DOlivier/DPattersen)Nortje

I'm going to drop this now, and come back in 2 months time once we've played all of our ODIs and the M1DC is in full swing.

So, Mr Oracle, are we reaching the Semi-Finals you think? I have a bottle of Whiskey riding on it...

Pretty good prediction you made.

A lot of talent in this particular squad but we have sent better to a World Cup and not won. Really hoping that they gel well and can manage to get themselves into the semifinals and hopefully our first final. However I still suspect that we'll fall out at the round robin phase as there is at least seven teams that are seriously capable of making it into the semifinals and into final from there.

i don't make binding predictions in knockout tournaments anymore.

The only thing I'm going to unfortunately call is mighty# to get 2/3 games and get dropped from the starting 11. I'm a massive fan, but think his time has finally come. He's even been dropping sitters and getting runout in the provincial T20 tournament. He has the best record in england, but I fear his technique is now letting him down now that his eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be. [would be overjoyed to be wrong on this]

We just need to make top4, then it's 2 games away from the cup.

With 10 teams/9 games you need to win 6 (or 5 if lucky).

So we can drop 3/4 games and still sneak in.

I think India/England are the big favourites, and we're in the chasing pack with Aus/NZ looking for the other 2 semi slots. The windies/pakistan have matchwinners that need to eat their porridge to get far.

If we're going to pull this off, we will probably need QdK&Tahir&Rabada to have good tournaments.

Seems doable.

Plus not being the top team currently takes some pressure off the boys for now.

But you know they will feel the psychological pressure in the knockout phases as everyone will bring up the dismal record in knockouts for the Proteas.

Just bat first in those knockouts, post as big a score as the pitch allows and let Tahir do his magic. If we bat 2nd we are open to meltdowns as the Alan Donald run-out is etched into the mind of cricket loving South Africans.

AB doing it one handed

https://twitter.com/aami_aakash/status/1121086522055217152

He's up there this year in the IPL, currently averaging 59 @ 160SR

Was wondering where he would have fitted into this team, and it's probably the vd dussen slot.

MSD is going, Gayleforce is going. I wonder if he has had second thoughts over there in India?

players older than AB at the WC

Tahir

Gayle

dhoni

Hafeez

Shoaib malik

Shaun Marsh

Mortaza (BAN)

Hash

Steyn

Ross Taylor

the only other guy not going who is playing well there is Shane Watson. (apart from Pant, who would walk into most squads, but like most India have chosen to take just 1 'keeper)

Seems doable.

um ja. that plan didn't go so well in 2007, found ourselves 5/27 inside 10 overs. and Warne wasn't even there.

Im calling the Windies as my Wild Card (dark horses [emoji85]) pick for the WC.

Dale Steyn re-injured his shoulder in that “parkie krieket” tournament in India. As ive always said, that tournament only serves the purpose of overplaying world cricketers leading to injuries. Point proven. And the only country to really benefit from the IPL is India. But sadly money talks...

Hash, as much as i love the guy, i doubt his inclusion for the WC. If he already has issues committing to the Cobras side (due to his dad’s health issues), what will that do for his morale when sitting in the UK? The team cant afford him traveling to and fro during the tournament? It pains me to say this, but i think they should have gone with Reeza, purely for the aforementioned reason.

Lets move on from ABD. He has made his choice, no thanks to CSA meddling in the last WC. He is class, of that theres never been doubt. But it is what it is.

I sincerely hope we do well, as im sure most of us do. But its not the strongest side we’ve ever put together.

Talking about ABD was totally hypothetical, I do wonder how many years he will play on for. He is HUGE in India, and is being smart with his legacy by building it there.

I don't think IPL is not all bad. They have done the right thing by including foreign players, whether 4 is the right number is a debate. I know it has relaxed the tension between players when playing nationally, as so many are teammates for 4 weeks of the year. It definitely has improved the exposure and abilities of local indian players. They will have the best depth of all countries, as a nation of a billion people should but at the end of the day you can only put 11 in the team.

back to WC. Steyn out for now after bowling 8 competitive overs, ngidi and nortje still not playing either. Rabada has continued on his massive workload. I thought we had a fast bowler too many, but that was with them all fit! if one breaks down during a game we are going to scramble to fill the overs. Good thing Chris morris is staying fit and effective

Swapping Dale for Chris Morris could be a good move, increase our batting slightly and giving up some bowling, but not too much.

The IPL goes on for closer to 6 weeks. But my point is this, we have players becoming fatigued as a result of playing an additional 5/6/7 weeks of cricket every year when they traditionally had their rest/off season. Some players also alter their playing schedules to fit the IPL in, meaning they skip many of their international obligations. Can you see why i say what i say?

Spot on though, the only nation to reap the rewards is India. And im not an Indian, so i couldnt care less about the IPL.
