sorry to hear this.

never accept an sms until you've confirmed with the bank that the money has cleared into your account

Was chatting to a friend that does work in Nigeria, think it was here as he does work all over, and he says the banks there have a 14 days clearing period for payments to SA. So he could come home after working there and it looks like his money is in only to be reversed within 14 days. Now he only accepts american dollars before he comes home.

How do you get a confirmation sms from Nedbank? How do you know you are getting a confirmation from any bank for that matter?? Each bank must have like 1000 sms numbers...

Does Nerdbank know this has happened? Have you contacted them yet?

Dead cert the SMS was sent by the scammer to make it appear as if it was from the bank. As mentioned above but bit late now is to actually check your account and ensure the amount reflects as available balance.

the sms is ligit but with an interbank transfer the money only goes through after 12 which means he can do the transfer on the internet then quickly go and empty his account so the transfer cant go through. Theres a pic of the bike in classifieds .. morewood shova soft tail

I'm not sure about other banks SMSing me... but the SMSes I get form FNB are all from the same number.

Man this sucks. I can understand that you wanted to take a transfer as payment though since few people want to carry that kind of amount in cash. Also cash can probably be forged as well (bit harder to do but happened with R200 notes not so long ago)

So the only way to prevent this from happening to someone else is to ask the guy to pay in the money first, then call the guy a day or more later to let him know that he can now collect the bike? Hopefully the buyer trust the seller enough to pay first without receiving the goods. Makes it kind of hard to sell something.

i think you can request that the person be notified, but obviously im no pro. Ok most likely the sms is b.s but how was he able to send an sms from such a long number: +2784000131700002. I checked with someone else and it seems that if you get any sms from nedbank its also the same amount of digits. The number just made it look more real.

Best way seems to meet the person at the bank and do it like that, or wait for the money to be in your account, but then the scam can come from the other side.
