Olympic. +-R700. I have a pair and they are pretty tough, but the soles aren't very grippy on rocks if you need to carry your bike.

There is also the new probike shoes, similar price, and I think the soles are rubber, so they should have more grip.

Also have a look in the classifieds section here on the hub.

I have a pair of the olympics mentioned above, used once, 29km.

Been cleaned and selling for R400 if you're interested, size 10.

Just a note on the sizing, I normally wear a size 9, but with the Olympics I had to take a size 8. Not sure if others have experienced this as well. Fit them on before buying :)

olympic best value for money.size wise buy one size smaller than what you would normally take.nice wide shoe for the flat footed like me.The probikes are also good value for money, but narrower fit than the olympics.olympic has 3 velcro fastners while probike has 2 plus one rachet fastner.i take a size 8 olympic where all my other shoes are a 9.the probike 9 is too narrow and the 10 way too big.i guess it boils down to fit and your budget in the end.happy shoe hunting.

Saw the new Olympics in Sportsmans starting at under R700. Robust shoe. Just retired a pair after 4 years' service.

My Olympics lasted less than a year... The "rubber" came off the sole from walking on rocks and rough terrain. I also found them a bit stiff for walking. I ended up with a pair of Diadora Geckos. Paid about R1000 for them but they lasted me 4 years and are still used for wet races. I bought a pair of Diadora Comp from CRC. On sale for about R500 a few months ago. Velcro and ratchet. Comfortable to walk in to a point... If you do a lot of walking and exploring, I would go for takkie type shoes. If you do a lot of XC type riding, then go for the conventional stiff soled shoe. A good benchmark is around R1000. In that bracket, you can't go wrong. Remember that what works for your mate might not work for you... ;)
