So since I started cycling about 3.5 years ago I have broken the following:

  • 1 collar bone (Plate put in and taken out 6 months later)
  • 5 ribs (2 separate events)
  • 1 cracked elbow with a floating bone chip (removed 5 months later after the elbow started swelling when chip moved out of position) I sit here typing this with the stich's from the elbow opp still in.

All I can say is if you enjoy MTB'ing make sure you have decent medical. I do after all the ops I have never had to make a co payment thank goodness.

I am not a reckless rider and do not do stupid things. Its just the older you get the less you bounce. blush.gif

In 18 years of road cycling I've never had a fall. I don't count the topple over in the early 90's when I started using clipless pedals. MTB, well another story. Only a few cracked ribs and roasties. Nothing serious. Luckily cycling days are over so I'm not tempting the cycling gods.

22 years - nothing broken.

I ride mountainbike, ride hard, take chances, fall often.

Learn how to fall properly.

If you fall with your arms outstretched in front of you, you are going to break stuff, usually your collarbone or wrist.

try to dissipate energy by rolling. no matter what the scenario, try and land in such a way that you roll onto your shoulder then onto your back. remember to tuck your arms in. often a roll like that can have you end up back on your feet again. if you cant roll, still try and take the impact with your shoulder or back.

example - the other day i misjudged a bunny-hop onto the kerb. in essence i smacked the kerb at 90 degrees travelling at about 45km/h. so over the bars i went. instead of putting my hands out in front of me i tucked my arms in and rotated ever so slightly so that the initial impact would be on my shoulder, the rotation kept going and i ended up on the pavement in a sitting position. ok, the front wheel was toast, bars were skew, and i had a few grazes but nothing that even required attention. if i had tried to land on my feet i would have had two messed up wrists and knees.

see how this guy dissapates energy by rolling - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQgFxDSqft4

best not let Brussel read this thread - he'll accuse you of crashing more than me

I managed about 4 years of road and track cycling with no broken bones - fun factor about 6/10. Then I started mtb'ing about 2.5 years back and I've had 3 broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and elbow and had numerous roasties, cuts and bruises - fun factor about 9/10

Medical costs not a joke at all and hospital plans cover very little. Considering how much money the radiologists make out of us, it would be nice to see them sponsoring some events :P

fractured and broke same collerbone in two separate crashes,as well as ribs and shoulder, lack of skill and stupidly.Have now learnt to take reasonable risks,I hope.Ride some minor downhill with jumps,I think to many people ride clipped in before they have the skills, and as a result are not balanced properly, and rely on the clips to stay on.When they do come off they are unable to protect,or "bale out" a minor fall then becomes much worse.I ride mainly clipped out most of the time, and I feel more confident,it has saved me on some occasions.

Compressed my T4 vertibra to half its size 7 years ago.

Partial tore to Left rotator cuff 1 year ago

Smashed my face and nose 6 months ago - had 2 operations to fix nose

Broke my wrist and grade 3 seperation of ac joint. Walking with external fixator in wrist (till Christmas)and hookplate in shoulder (till middle next year)

Hope to be on roadbike early Jan and then asap on mtb and bmx in time for bmx worlds in May.

It sucks when you get hurt but cant wait to get back on.

Only broken 1 bone. Scaphoid. Took 3months too heal, the second time (rockclimbing) took 3 ops and three months to sort out.

All in I have been very fortunate in my falls, learning how to fall helps, but I have a lot of scars. Have had more than 50 stitches in my right knee alone.

I reckon Constantiaberg Medi Clinic could sponsor the whole of Tokai Forest for trailbuilding and maintenance and still come out way ahead. On the other hand, perhaps they would rather the trails be gnarly? Maybe we could interest them in building some drops and jumps for us? All in return for a few broken bones on a regular basis. :D

Personally, I've contributed a broken wrist (2 years ago)and collarbone (3 months ago). I'm now considering riding with a whole chicken-suit. ;)

Oh, and another broken wrist, but that was B.C. (before cycling).

Oh yeah, and 2 broken ribs, also B.C., from fishing, still hard to believe!

Almost added a spine on Monday to my ribs of three years ago. The pain! I don't often see my riding buddy shaken up, but Monday's performance must have been good.

If broken helmets count, I can list only one.. yes Monday. hmm, considering a chicken suit too.

I'd also just like to take this opportunity to extend thanks to the guy who thought it was a good idea to build.. who knows... what could have been landing but the shape, structure and overall design proves that it was nothing other than a f*ck up!

Oh, tuck and roll! I live another day.
