I'm considering using a shim to fit a 27.2 seatpost on my carbon hardtail which requires a 30.9 diameter seatpost. Anybody tried using a shim? What are the pro's and cons?

Don't see any reason why it shouldn't work and do its job effectively.

I use a portion of a RedBull can as a shim between my Thomson seatpost and the seattube as there is a millimetre of play.

Good luck in finding your size. I eventually found the size I was looking for(27.2 to 31.6) online locally, for almost the price of a new seat post. Bought a new seat post and sold the old one instead. CRC has a nice selection of alu and plastic shims for around R80 if you don't come right locally.

Also using a shim 27.2 to 31.6, I got a nice one from CRC as caad4 says for about R80. I did find however the Carbon Seat Post tended to slide down in the shim more than when using my other seatpost without a shim. Some baby powder sorted that out. Oh and it now smells like a new born baby.

I ran a shim on one of my bikes but only cos it was a weird diameter. 30.2. yours is a std size so i would deff not run a shim.

That's just my opinion but why run a "fix" when you can just get a seatpost that fits perfectly?

Thanks so much guys - the reason for the size discrepancy is I'm considering buying a 2nd hand kcnc ti-pro. So I can go for the red bull with wings option or get the CRC shim and use baby powder if it slips. I think I'm sorted :-)

The brown stuff that my bike sometimes gets covered with luckily does not smell like the brown stuff that babies sometimes get covered with, also just sprays of with a hosepipe.

Some of the downhill riders on this forum reckon you can use the hose on the babies as well...

I used to untill Social Services got involved - something about it being -2 in the middle of July - not quite sure.

I think as long as it is summer it is okay, the babies seem to enjoy it if its warm.

Wait! You mean to say you can't?

A 27.2mm seatpost isn't a good idea on a moutain bike. Especially if it has a sloping top tube and hence long seatpost. It just isn't stiff enough. Rather get the real McCoy.

27.2 should really just be used on road bikes.

I had a similar problem once. Someone caught me washing a baby by holding it by its ears and swinging it back and forth through the water. They put up a terrible fuss and never allowed me to get my side of the story in.

That water was so bloody hot I'd have burnt my hands if I held the baby like they showed me.

You will have to tighten it more than usual to get a proper tight fit, and this may damage your frame/seatpost if you are not careful. I would get the correct size to prevent it from sliding down.
