I will be transporting a dual suspension bike on the roof of my car for approx 9hrs. The forecast is for rain all the way.

Am I crazy to do this? Will my bike suffer any damage when travelling at 100 km/hr in a downpour?

Your thoughts and ideas will be appreciated?

Yes. It will do damage. Water will get into all the bearings. If you can, put it behind the car.

Just a thought so please no flaming,maybe a bit of clingwrap around the bars,shifters,stem and the bb.At 100km/hour water may get in were you do not want it.Lube everything well when you get to the other side??

Yes. It will do damage. Water will get into all the bearings. If you can, put it behind the car.

Never wash your bike again. Water will damage it. Never ride near a puddle or in the rain again. Same reason.

Put it behind your car? Then not only do you get water, but you get all the grit, oils and whatnot sprayed up by the car wheels. Your car wheels.

It's a mtb. FFS! Over-think why don't you. It's like washing the bike. Geeeezus.

 

Do you use a pressure sprayer on your bike (let alone for 9hrs) I don't and never will.

My bike is clean enough already.

Just a thought so please no flaming,maybe a bit of clingwrap around the bars,shifters,stem and the bb.At 100km/hour water may get in were you do not want it.Lube everything well when you get to the other side??

Yes and thanks, it works well. Do it with my road bike. Hate a wet saddle!

Think about it. You're driving through the water at 100kph or, you are standing still and aiming a 100kph jet of water at your bike. It is the same thing.

Yes, rain falling, and you at 100km/h is the same as your home pressure washer of around 1,500(ish) psi.

You make sense.

 

If you could wrap something around the bearings, such as the headset, hubs and suspension members, it will slow down the water and prevent it from slipping in underneath the contact seals.

 

Contact seals of the type on catridge bearings (which are plentyful in headsets, BBs, hubs and suspension pivots) are easily overpowered by pressure - be it air or water being aimed at it. They are really just designed to be splash proof. If you can protect them, they'll survive.

 

It is no use attempting to lube everything afterwards, you're just mixing grease and water then, which will emulsify and will destroy the bearings. The trick would be to get the water out, which is impossible. Those seals will keep it inside, very effectively.

 

By putting the bike behidn the car you're putting it out of the direct air/water stream where the water is misted onto the bike rather than sprayed directly at it. However, a wheel that peeps out is still vulnerable.

I just spoke to my mate, Vinodh, who designs wings for Airbus, and he snickered at this. He reckons your grip of hydro dynamics is totally flawed - rookie mistake perhaps? - because there are four variables to be considered: temperature, pressure, velocity, density. Please elaborate on how you came to the above assertion in terms of this. You are not driving through water. You are driving through air with falling water. Very different from a concentrated source of water being directed from a hose. Driving through rain, he ventured, would render the viscosity of water irrelevant considering there is a barrier or lubrication. He mentioned a concept I had never heard of before - vorticity - which the turbulence generated by the bike on top of the car would cause and which would limit the compressability of water molecules and negate the chance of it working its way through the seals.

 

This is a layman's understanding of an engineering topic, as is yours. Maybe the real engineers on the hub can set us right.

eish and this so early n a Friday,

 

there are def enough people here that needs to get out and get some riding.

 

The guy asked a simply question, he is concerned over his bike, don't belittle him or his question, give your view, politely and step back, and damm guys, stop the personally attacks/comments.
