Okay...so I feel like a complete noob as I bought a Garmin Edge 500 Bundle and yes....I don't really know how to use the thing

1. How can see my Heart Rate while I cycle? (I have the bundle setup)

2. How can I see my cadence while I cycle?

3. Average speed while I cycle?

4. Also where can I upload the software towards?

5. When pressing the lap button by accident, is there a way I can reverse it or will it just go like to a new lap every 5km then?

Thanks for the help people

Welcome to the Garmin world.

You can customize the screen to see whatever you want to see.

Heart rate.

Cadence

Max speed

Average speed

Gradient

...anything else you want

Garmin have a program called Training Centre that works with the Edge 500. Available HERE

Alternatively you can use Garmin Connect. Available HERE

Pdf manual of the Edge 500 available HERE

Ok,

so...

a) you bought a garmin, which is a step in the right direction.

B) you need to go to settings-->bike settings-->data fields-->then go up/down to get the amount of variables shown-->then press enter while on a variable to change it-->scroll through the list of variables until you find what you want-->press enter-->repeat until you are satisfied.

c) and that's how it's done.

Its a pleasure bru! Now that you have it all setup the only other thing to look at is the correct software to use.

Garmin Training Centre is the worst ... Garmin Disconnect slightly better but it still sucks, so if you are serious about your training and like customizing things, invest a little and get SportTracks. http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/

Not going into all the great features and benefits of SportTracks now, Ive done that many times on here already. But you can track your equipment, customize graphs, compare training rides, etc. etc. etc.

Only thing we did not chat about was the Auto Lap

Go to Settings > Bike Settings > Auto Lap - choose Off

If you choose By Position, it will Lap every time you go past those co-ordinates where you pushed Lap or Start (you can choose once again). Quite handy when you are doing Killarney or krits!

Enjoy playing with your new toy!

hi MTB_ROADIE,

Just wanted to share my experience regarding my Garmin. i have a FORERUNNER 405 which i've been using for around 3 years. Inveriably the battery needed replacing and had to be sent away. The strap was also knackered and i asked for a quote to have this replaced. i'll save you the drama but the long and the short of it was that i only received my unit back 6 MONTHS later and it was a replacement unit (i think they lost my original unit) and was asked to pay R1500. I then asked, seeing as i was paying in, if i could get Garmin edge 500 like yours as an upgrade (i was willing to pay in some extra to cover the difference) but they could only sell it to me at full price so I reluctantly coughed up the cash for the replacement unit.

I was really annoyed but their terrible service and turn around time, which i found unacceptable. I'm not sure if this is an isolated case but i have heard that the after sales service from Garmin is generally terrible. I sincerely hope someone from Garmin does read this as i dread my battery dying on me again.

otherwise its a great piece of kit!

just my two cents worth!

Wayne

Good luck with them reading the hub!

Oh and the batteries does not have a lifetime expectancy, same with your phone, camera, laptop, gps, at some stage you are going to have to replace it.

The service from Garmin is generally no too bad, although at times I've not been too impressed either.

I've had 4x Edge 305's replaced. The reason why is a long story and if you have a whole lot of nothing to do today, search for "Garmin Edge 305 Sucks" here. There were some comments from Garmin but that was from personal emails and other forums, they don't frequent the hub.

I've had one Edge 500 replaced after it stopped being recognised as an external usb device, in other words the pc/laptop could not see it! All other functions were still fine. I had to pay like R400 for an international replacement warranty since I imported mine. They gave me back a brand new blue unit :( (I had the neutral one, no blue on my bike thank you) which I promptly swapped with a friend that imported the red one for me!

  • 1 month later...

I have recently got my Garmin 500 and need to ask a couple questions regarding setting it up

I'm trying to set up my second bikes details, but it will not let me add a wheel size, it does not even show an option to allow me to enter any details. I've set up my first bike which has 26" wheels and so does my second bike.

On the first bikes details it asks if you want custom or auto wheel size, have chosen custom and add my wheels circumference, I'm not getting this particular option.

Is it possible to see the details of the two bikes on my computer ( ie via Connect or Training Centre), so as to possibly change deails there, i have looked but not sure if I can. I've not done any riding yet on either bikes, tomorrow will be the first time.

I also need to know on the various pages where you can view info, I know you can customise the amount of things shown, but is it possible to customise whats included into the amount of things showing. I hope that makes sense.

Many Thanks

Just got one myself (doen 2 rides) and I don't know it too well but I thought it callibrates the wheels size using the GPS signals. I might be wrong

Nice, newbie like me to this, just trying out the heart rate monitor now, lol. How have you found it so far, did you go with the bundle?

I know there is an Auto option which the GPS calculates your wheel size, not sure how this is done, but there is also a custom option which you can add your own values. It just does not let me choose auto or custom on the second bike I've added.

Yes took the bundle and love it. Coming from the Polar CS100 there's no comparison. I had my LBS mount it for me. When I was on the bike the first time a message popped up saying "Wheel size callibrated". So I'm not so sure if you need to set it yourself, I told the mechanic I'll come back once I've had a bit of a play around.

I battled a little with Garmin.connect yesterday. I see you well on your way already. Know more than me for sure.
