Pantani go to the running gurus either Runner group stores or Jakes at Sweat shop in Dunkeld. The name brand is not what you must worry about but the fit and profile your foot requires. Take it from me I have done several thousand kays and still am doing them from 10k's to 100 milers and the best of all road races the COMRADES. At the Engen to Engen rides speak to Ernie Welch(Microsoft) or Arnie Geerts from Supercycling they know about running shoes as well. Call me for more info

Of course being Pantani they would HAVE to be bling, so I would go for shoes that are slightly obsxure, have style and a cycling connection:  try getting hold of Mizuno's!  Very good shoes, difficult to get hold of locally.  Now you just need the right model for your stride and foot!  Happy hunting bling boy.

...of course, a REAL style man would go for these. Anatomic fit has new meaning...

In <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Pretoria I would recommend Run Away Sport and Running In.  NB is the best value for money. NB and Asics (top seller) are also available in different widths which are good as ZA feet tend to be wider.  Nike is good but tends to be narrow.  <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

BUT as previously said, it is more important to get the right type of shoe than the brand.

Nike' date=' not a specialist running shoe?  You lost me there mate.  The Bowerman series is the mother of all running series.  Yes, Asics are pretty cool and the geek's choice as they only make running shoes, but saying Nike isn't a specialist running shoe is a bit ignorant.  Yes, they make shoes that you should'nt run in, but Shimano make fishing reels you shouldn't cycle with!!!

Some of the technical running shoes made by Nike are top notch, and they have taken a lot of running magazine prizes (top shoe last year!) for their innovative designs.

Saying that, I would not say Nike is the best, again; it depends on your feet, but saying they they are not specialist running shoes is sweeping at best and ignorant at worst.

Here is the lowdown on my favourite, the Pegasus (and yes, lo and behold; I am that rare thing: a neutral runner.  Gasp, they DO exist!)

Product Description:
Nike Men's Air Pegasus Plus 2007 Running Shoe by Nike

Simply on of the best runners on the market today, the Nike Air Pegasus+ running shoe for Men has ticked off many awards the last two years. Best Running Shoe- Editor's Choice Award 2006, Runners World. 2007 Runners World-Personal Best Award- Best Cushioning.

WH, you didnt read my post properly.

Or maybe I was vague - it was 10pm after all.!

I dont think we can comfortably compare fishing reels and bikes, lets stick to like on like "Penn and Shimano", "Cannondale and Cervelo", "Asics and Nike".

I said Nike is "not a specialist running shoe manufacturer" - and I stick to that.

Probably, 90% of Nikes production is aimed at the normal casual street market - the guy who wants a sport shoe but the furtherest he will  run is to the fridge and back during tv breaks, that dosnt sound very specialist to me.

Sure, they have a few models which are fine running shoes, but buying a Nike shoe at Edgars based on the hyped up ads on TV is going to assure you of some sort of injury, where as fit and type aside, any Asics shoe will be suitable for running in.

Thats what I meant by specialist.

Porky, I agree 100%. I just didn't want people to exclude Nike because they make some inferior shoes, when they make some pretty decent ones as well.  Plus I was in a grumpy mood last night, so excuse my sarcastic tone.  I need a holiday!

Every brand is good *nike, Asics, Newbalence* nothing wrong with them, just go to a shoe shop and let them check if you're pronating or not .etc

I've been told by all my running coaches at my school that Asics is the best... I don't know yLOL

I own a pair of newbalence, i did the two oceans half in them just fine, and they were about R300 I think

so ye.. Do shoe makes really matter ???

BTW Nike Pegasus are AWESOME for neutrals !! I know that !!!Clap

To be honest Nike is not considered a specialist running shoe, they have other more commercial markets.

Please tell to company that spends millions of dollars on research and sponsorship per annum that they are not a manufacturer of serious running shoes. Let Alberto Salazaar now that he won the comrades in a pair of mass market running shoes.Wink

David#7, David#7, lets not get into sarcastic tirades here.

I made my point and I clarified it, if you dont agree with it, thats fine, but  validate your point, dont just quote some generalised hype (let me assure you EVERY SHOE MANUFACTURER puts up millions in R & D) and point to some runner who uses them.

I can point to hundreds of top athletes who dont use Nike - what dos it prove.?

In general the shoes top runners use is a function of sponsership not preferance - Alberto Salazaar could run the Comrades in flip flops and beat me in the best Asics - I dont see the point.?

By the way Alberto Salazaar is one of the most gifted and nicest runners in the world and one of my personal favourites - did you know, he won Comrades after training for 6 months in his living room on a tread mill because there was too much snow and incliment weather to train outside where he lives.

It appears this post is in jepordy of degenerating into a "brand" argument which is not what Pantani was asking about initially.

Actually, Pantani appears to have lost interest in the post.!

Anyway, I am always amazed at how some folk will post just to be critical, when the contents of their own post, adds little, if any, value, and their post content just shows they have a limited (if any) understanding of the subject in discussion.

Anyone can have a quick peek at a web site and regurgitate the info there, but unless you actually understand what you are talking about....................well.!

Sometimes, I think they just want to be controversial.

Anyway, running and shoes is a subject I DO know something about and most of the info given here is sound and good.

I must say I agree with Porky and Willihond, some manufacturers DO specialize and some dont.

Asics specialises in running shoes, Dunlop specialises in tennis shoes,Sketchers specialises in casual shoes, - All of them do a good job -Nike makes many types of shoes for a number of differant sports, and do a good job of all of them, but personally I dont think you can be "everything to everybody" and somewhere there will be a bit of "cross representation" - thats unimportant if you are just walking around the mall and want to look bling, but if you are in serious training for an endurance event I would always suggest looking harder at a specialist brand.

After all you dont go to the vet when you are ill, do you!!

Pantani, good choice. have you at least got a pair of old shoes with you so they can check your wear pattern? it really does make a difference if they can check that and is well worth it.

(p.s. running needs to start with a warning - while not as expensive as cycling there are still lots of toys to buy... nice new running socks, running belt, if you use a polar you have got to get the foot pod, etc, etc, etc Wink )

I started running seriously about 3 years ago, use neutrals and have run up to marathon distance in:

Asics Cumulus - light, soft, not as durable as I'd like

New Balance 1060 - good support and comfort, toebox design chafed

Brooks Radius - current, my favourite - not at all plush, but comfortable. Good wear so far.

My wife has been through several pairs of Asics 2110 plus orthotics.

This suggests that there's more than one answer to the question.

Common factor in all of these: The Cape Runner.

P.S. A good podiatrist helps too.
