Good post Dr Obree

One question: Big calves = fast twitch? How accurate is that statement?

Hell here's me thinking for the last 20 years that I dont have a fast twitch fibre anywhere in me....

Hey SV

No scientific base at all, Its just something I have noticed with the guys I coach and looking around when riding. FastTwitchers also pedal slower than SlowTwitchers. You may find you do have a bigger % of FT muscles, but have never developed them.

I used to believe I could never spin so I started concentrating on it, for track racing, now I can do 60min on the IDT at 120rpm easily.

Who would you recommend i should go too? Maybe all I need is a cycle coach for a few sessions to head me out in the right direction.

Why don't you ask the Colonel for a quote on training. I know there are various levels of engagement to fit different budgets. He works with Jeroen and Science to Sport so if you want the tests at some point he can hook you up.

I can pm you his email if you're interested.

Ha ha I think he saves the Hitler act for when he is racing. He's surprisingly motivational with his clients.

We did several 40km TT's and Ramp tests, VO2 Max and a plenty of sub max tests. From that we got FTP, VO2 Max, Max Power, accurate HR zones and Max HR, as well as our times for the 40k TT's. It was interesting to compare these to the times the pros had done who had been tested there.

The sub max tests were interesting in terms of finding out where you are fatigue-wise, and I've continued to do these on my own.

Obviously it was all free as we'd volunteered in response to an ad placed here by Ben Capostagno.

Hey LL, I also did the study with Ben, top bloke and really interesting to compare my 4 x 40km TT stats over the course of the study, and also the mental aspect of pushing yourself on an indoor bike for over an hour...found myself in some dark places at halfway stage. Ben has his own motivational techniques though....

I'm actually going in to the SSI tomorrow morning for my VO2 max test and to get my structured training program, looking forward to getting back in the lab for some weird reason!
