how to wash cycling clothing

Motorex makes a helmet spray, designed for motorbike helmets but my boyfriend used it when he did the Epic and it works very effectively. Otherwise just put your helmet at your feet when you shower and all the shampoo suds get the helmet clean and smelling peachy!

SOaking straight after does work wonders. With Assos bibs in particular, I was advised to at least rinse the bibs immediately, otherwise they go threadbare in the back because the sweat breaks down the fibres apparently (happened to 3 pairs of ours despite following all the other washing instructions, I didscovered this only subsequently)

My wife will say I'm a bit of a pain in the ass, but this is a sure fire way to keep clothes from smelling:

Get your kit in the washer when you get off the bike.

Sweat has bacteria and when it dries it stinks.

So before it starts drying get it in the machine and then normal OMO does a perfect job.

It's not always easy to do, but it keeps smelling neutral for years.

(The inlaws also got used to me walking around in a towel after my Sat morning rides  )

Yebo!

Don't delay the stinky...

Makes sense. I have "lost" a few pairs of shorts this way. It becomes, as you say, "threadbare" in a few spots, and also get a whiteish tinge to it. If you stretch it in those spots, you can see it is very thin, where the other non affected, areas is normal.

SO WE ALL LEARN.

p.s. I only use a liquid detergent (with protein remover), and NO STASOFT. Don't have a problem with funny smells (or skidmarks :D )

You're supposed to wash cycling clothing? :o

A minimum of once every 3 rides for your bib shorts!

Minimum.

Ah TNT1, you can spot a Noob a mile off! Specialisedfan, everyone knows that on the Hub you just keep asking the same questions, replying to the same threads about no helmets or riding on national roads or cycluists vs drivers or why cyclists don't greet each other or ... ad infinitum. It's like reading Bicycling magazine, there is no end to the repetition. Search? Pah!

In general I have very strict rules regarding washing my clothes and they become even more so with my cycling wear.

NO staysoft or warm water to be brought close to any of my clothes and a wash only when it is needed.

I also prefer not to hang black garments and my bibs in the sun and ironing is only for my cotton work shirts - nothing else! [Heat kills! accept if it is my ghd :blush: }

Not quite the same, clothing can include socks and shirts as well.

If you fall ride like weedmod, you get skidmarks on those items as well.

I once got worse on an undershirt. Had to stop during a race for a number two. :o

Wash as soon as possible, no fabric softener and when possible turn the cycling shorts inside out and let the sun do its work! Otherwise I just hang them up in my office (work from home and the office looks more like a bicycle shop anyhow!) to air dry. I read somewhere that sta-soft does something to the sweat wicking properties of the material.

All good

Keep Stasoft or similar away from all synthetic products. Also no tumble drying

The sun is good for drying

Look up a few posts (post #26). I covered that eventuality.
