I see the short route will now start ahead of the longer route rider...I have to be back home before 10am, thus I will now not be able to do the race now... :-(

Useless doing the 30km race...I guess I now have to do a longer ride tomorrow.

Sheesh that is a late. I don't have to get up until 6. What madness is this?

I notice PPA are keeping schtum about such trivial details as start times. Where did you unearth this info Zac?

What was the strategy of the organizers to have the short route riders start ahead of the 85ers?

Anyone have an answer or reasonable theory?

They wanted us out of the way before the Elites came up Ou Kaapse and down the other side.

Also the intersections maybe?

I rode the short route with my kids and we finished about 2/3 down the field. That was before the elites finished the long route. The advantage, as I see it, is that the slow / inexperienced / young riders were not in the way of the racing snakes sprinting for the finish. It was safer for all concerned. (With the short route starting last, often what happens is that they finish about the same time as the long route, causing conjestion in the last few kilometers after the routes join up before the finish.) The disadvantage, seen from the long route riders (normally me too) point of view, is the late start and late finish.

It makes sense to have moved the long route start to 7, I would rather start later and not have to contend with the slower short route riders on Black Hill and Ou Kaapse Weg. At lease it was a cool day and little wind, but I won't do this ride again unless the start is brought back to an earlier slot.

Am I the only one seeing the contradiction?

Yes, in the past there has been chaos with long route racing bunches trying to overtake weaving short route riders up ou kaaps, with irate motorists trying to overtake the racing bunches. Much better to have less congestion.

Quite enjoyed the late start too. Only had to get up at 5.15 instead of the usual 4, and I was home in time to make a braai for our lunch guests.
