Err. I think you are completely misinformed. Reference from wikipedia for you : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-country_cycling

"Riding or racing is also only deemed cross-country if the technical complexity of the trails is easy or moderate. Trails nearly impossible even to experienced riders are more often dubbed "all-mountain", "freeride", or "downhill".

Cross-country racing emphasizes endurance above technical prowess, and races vary from 30 minutes to 24 hours in length. Additionally, many mountain bike races are divided up into stages so as to span several days. Races can be either point-to-point or lap-based. "

Owned.

Perhaps you should try these guys: www.uci.ch - they know a thing or two about cycling.

Do the terms XCO and XCM mean anything to you?

Hold on - I'll try and put it in a language you'll understand:

Like bru shwah marathon is like totally further than cross country and like fully not as knarly shizzle your nizzle your momma so fat wikipedia aint god.

Comprende?

XC = Cape Epic.

XC = dude at tokai on 29er that races to top on dual dirt track then comes down the same track instead of single track, training for some race.

XC = enduro race or even MTB leg of iron man.

XC = time trials etc.

XC = dude at tokai in full cycling clothing kit top to bottom, 29er, epic jersey.

XC = dude ramming on brakes down the single track going at super slow pace down single track, destroying single track for rest of trail riders.

XC = guy going fast up mountain on prob 29er bike and epic jersey.

XC = guy with all the latest gadgets on his bike - GPS, computers, everything.

Trail = freestyle, trail, single track riding.

Trail = guy wearing normal clothes when MTBing at tokai.

Trail = guy going slow up mountain

Trail = guy screaming down single track having a blast, fast, not braking.

Trail = no computers on bike.

...and I thought you said you were unbiased!

k@k ending to what started out as a good, unbiased post!!

Let's forget about semantics of XC etc....

The man had a point when he said 29er is not ideal in ALL situatuions and vice versa...

Let's just leave it at that....

I own a 29er and I love it.

I own a 26inch bike and I love (OK, maybe not as much as before, but I have not divorced it yet).

I believe I ride better on a 29er because my times are faster and I seem to be going faster easier, but I actually don't care what anybody else thinks as long as I am allowed to think what I think.

I have friends who own 26 and 29ers and I enjoy riding with them ... some wear baggy pants some wear lycra ... we all enjoy mountain biking.

I think I do marathons (or what I think UCI classifies as XCM - which I think stands for cross country marathon but I actually don't know (or care). I do not do XCO (Olynmpic cross country) because I do not like going round in circles and am probably not good enough (or confident enough or whatever) but I do enjoy single track ... I do not particularly like bunny hopping unless I need to and will not judge a bike on its ability to be bunny hopped ... but if you do, then enjoy it on whatever bike you like.

If you like a 26 inch .. ride the thing and if it makes you go faster or makes MTB more fun then, hey good luck to you.

Who actually cares which is faster or better, or whether it is a marketing ploy by the distributors, retailers, ANC and ride what you like -- be strong enough to make your own decision, just stop judging me because I made my own decision on whether I lile a 29er or not.

In short, use whatever equipment makes you go out an have the most fun -- I do!

To be fair he said nothing new - most 29er riders battle with the larger wheels over tight, twisty, downhill/freeride style courses.

It's the reason the 29er phenom has not infiltrated the world of downhill.

For XC (XCO for the purists), fooking aboot over jumps and fast/twisty downhills its 26er all the way!

I have the anthem 29er, I did epic, I ride the mtb series - I am that XC guy with the gadgets and let me just say if u think the 29er is slow on single track then u are hugely mistaken - I ride up the hills so I can bomb down the mountains - trust me when I say there were and are some serious descends at the epic that are pretty much single track for kilometers. On the short sharp climbs the 29er struggles.

That's my 2c worth
