XC? Or XCM, XCO or XCS?

WTF is AM? You ride so fast that you go back in time, so a ride that started in the PM finishes the previous AM?

OVIAAAS!

Ahh. Now if you do THAT, then you are SILLY!

The geometry of 29er is not the geometry of a 26err, with bigger wheels fitted.

If it was, then even decent riders would battle on tight single track - with or without Bar Ends. :D

I'm fairly sure if you did do that - that you wouldn't be able to ride at all what with the tyre being jammed up against the shock and all...

Hmmm

Sadly, there are apparently some who have fitted 29er fork to 26err frames that have a large rear wheel clearance.

Noobs!

WHAT? Thats an expensive exercise for limited returns...

Plus what do you do with a spare 26" front wheel?

Bizarre...

Does anyone know of any bike shops in Cape Town that have any demo 29er's? I've been into 2 bike shops in the last week and just get a dumb look when I say I'd like to do a test ride before I commit. At this stage I dont have any preference for brand just want to try one out.

I had a 29er hardtail for a year and have just moved back to a 26 Giant Anthem, damn it is good to be back throwing the bike around, doing bunny hops without a developing a hernia! At first the smaller wheels were weird but in no time I was back to FUN FUN FUN.

Cycle Addiction have some demo models - nothing fancy though, but if you ask nicely maybe you'll get to ride some of the staff members' bikes.

I heard 29ers cause global warming and are largely responsible for the worlds human trafficking issues

My 2c

As far as comparing 29er to 26 in terms of speed, efficiency etc can't be done on opinions or speed over a piece of terrain. Sometimes you go faster, sometimes slower - the limited time difference is not scientific enough and opinions differ, are personal, and will change from one day to the next. Some guru will have to do scientific comparison - and then ? we know it will say the 26 is good for this and the 29 good for that.

I have a hard tail 26 which I use more for the flat road trips, non-technical night rides etc. Once tried the Crater Cruise on a HT ....so much friggin corrugation on the dirt roads (most of the race)your ass, teeth, liver and cerebellum shiver and shake to destruction. So, the hard tail now mainly retired to use for shopping trips, mail collection, gym visits.

I have a 26 dual sus super light carbon bike - that is a pleasure to ride anywhere ! but hammers your legs on rocky sections, specially if they are on a uphill where rocks try to stop you on every second pedal stroke.

I am also starting to get a bit older and bored with breaking so many ribs and nursing so many roasties. On really technical stuff it is light and easy to maneuver but can get a lot more scary compared to the larger 29 wheels.

I have a full sus 29er - and its heaven ! Sure it weighs more than the duel sus 26er, but I don't worry about rocks and holes and bushes - I go flat out and if I lose the line , so what, I just go over the bush and rock and hole and join the trail again as soon as I can.

Sure 3 inches higher to fall - but I have not come so close or often to falling as I did on the tiny 26 wheels. The 26 was nice to bunny hop roots and sh!t, but don't need to on the 29er - just bully it over. So 3inches higher to fall - so what, it just doesn't happen that often anymore and besides, I look forward to the longer air time and higher better view of the new flight path !

I would recommend a duel sus 29er to anyone looking to buy a new bike.

Hey Mampara, how does this compare to a 26er, can you feel much of a difference?

There is no way a 26 is faster up a hill than a 29. It is power to weight ratio of the rider and the gear you select. It's pure physics man. One pedal rotation = x meters. Change gear and one pedal rotation = y meters, gravitational pull is the same. At the end of the day, one person with two bikes (26 and 29) that weigh the same with the right gear ratios for each bike will get the same speed up a hill. Full stop. On technical climbs, the rollability of the 29 may be better at eating the bumps = more speed.

For me personally you've hit the nail on the head there - my weakness has always been very rocky, steep, low speed climbs - the 29er seems less affected by the rocks and tends to maintain momentum but rolling over the bumps rather than bouning off them. This equates to faster up technical climbs. Traction seems better on my 29er as well. I have zero scientific proof of course but my instinct reckons the 29er is faster when traction & momentum become factors.

The moderate/easy climbs I agree with - climbing is power to weight and 29ers are heavier (for equal quality frame/wheel/components).

That be your bike? Nice ride. Where did you get the 650B rims from?

In December cyclelab in westlake had 2or 3 bikes all GF 29er I had a bike for about 5 days fitted it with my seat post saddle and bars and did 3 rides in Tokai one of about 40kms so I got a good feel

I ended up getting an Anthem 29er but that was price vs spec but their service for the test was great in the end the GF was quite a bit heavier and slightly lower spec
