I disagree with this strategy, it is really important to get a seeding on day 1 and keep it for the duration.

By being seeded your start in the top half of the field and can mosey up to the start gate 10-15 minutes before the off. Do this event unseeded and you'll add hours to your day, either getting to the start gate early to be at the front of unseeded or onto the finish as you get stuck behind slow hikers on difficultish sections.

Go as hard as you can every day, that why you've trained.

I have been training since October and do about 13hr-15hrs a week, intervals (killarney)/long LSD rides/Hills and races. I just want to finish this damn thing. I am generally close to top 100 for Sani and seeded D for PPA, top 20% Attakwas so I can ride a bit but no racing snake. I really do not know what the 'depth' of talent will be for the Epic so we are in dark as to where we want to come.

Thank you for all the advise, some really good ones!

Anudder thing i found useful on each stage...

Before the race starts (now would be a good time) print and plasticize a small profile of each stage (and one for your team mate) that you can carry with you in your shirt pocket or somewhere that is easy to reach while riding. The route information on the CE website is a good source for the route profile.

The idea being that you can keep track of where the long hard climbs / descents are and also where the water points are located.

On a single stage event you can still make a mental note of where the hard climbs are, but on a multi stage event you don’t want to waste time trying to remember or figure out how many climbs are left…...

So far good advice. For real you only need to try and enjoy yourself. The minute you stop that it becomes hard work and your mind will want your body to stop. Just keep going. Unless you are coming last there is someone out there having a harder time than you. Help your partner as much as you can. It is a 2 way street out there.

Fissan Paste. lots of Fissan Paste.

Race the prologue, it wont kill you that much and a better seeding is worth it to mix it where you belong. You will get to know the 20 teams either side of you well, make friends, it may come in handy.

Eat, eat eat...then eat more. In afrikaans they say :Eet vir die honger wat kom. Never allow yourself to bonk, it's a long painful way out of that hole.

Get massages.

Get to the toilets first.

Sleep all you can.

Lube your chain often.

Treat your bike nicely, caress it through the technicals, saving your bike and tires is better than making up 15secs on the descent.

Bunch ride on the flats, take turns.

Eat

Look after your partner - Take the wind if you're stronger, tell him/her if you're suffering. Dont be afraid to slow down even if it's just until you recover. Don't just ride off into the distance and expect them to be okay, help them, which in turn helps your team arrive sooner. Remind your partner to eat.

Pack your own nutrition, powder in ziplock sachets, get the water points to do the water refills and hand them the powder too while you scoff the jellies. Shove foods into your bib legs, so you can reach them easier as you depart the WP. if you cant stomach too many sugars, pre pack rolls and sweet potatoes. Use the nights food hall to provide yourself with lunch for the ride the next day.

Drink lots of water, rehydrate, recovery protein and more water, fruit juices and smooties they dish out...

Wear sunscreen.

The best piece of advise I was given was START EVERY DAY, doesn't matter how bad you feel!

Then my advice, focus on one day at a time don't worry too much about that big stage that's coming ......

Big stage? Let's call it more bang for your buck. The longer you are on your bike the more value for money you get. The pros are sponsored so they don't worry about this kind of thing. If I spend 8 days at 10 hours per day I get more for my money than them.

Ok ok it that's rubbish!! :)

Dis is very true indeed, aim for the start, then break it up into chunks... the 1st water point, 2nd water point, 3rd water point and finish.

Got sick the night before that long hard stage (Friday i think...cant quite remember exactly) vomiting and gippo guts the whole night and could not keep food or fluids down or in.... Thought that was my race run, was nearly in tears....

Long story shortened, started, drank lots of rehydrate, finished ok and lived to brag another day... LOL

The Epic is what it is for a reason...

It will break:

Your Bike

Your Body

Your Mind

repair in reverse order

And your partner (and he will break you too)
