Fastest A rider last year was 2h48

Wanted 2h39 this year but realistically I am aiming for 2h45 or less.

(yes 5-6 minutes is a huge difference)

Is this possible??

Can anybody comment on the cohesiveness of the A group last year?

All depends on the weather. Wind guru says 23 knotts on Sat night, dying down to 8 - 10 on Sunday. Hopefully thats the case oltherwise breaking 3hours will be an achievement let alone 2:45?

Unless you're paid to ride your bike beating the A bunch by 5-6 minutes is impossible.

Riding A, B or C you'll get the finishing time of the group - having your own goal in those groups is pointless.

You can probably shave off a minute or two if you sit on the front and pace yourself silly but it's risky - you may get dropped near the end and lose chunks of time.

Do your fair share at the front - no more - no less and be happy with the time the group rides is my advice.

In near perfect conditions in 2008 the front A group did a 2:40 with VA & VB languishing 6-8 minutes behind. It's the riding style of the over zealous young guns. There's no particular "cohesiveness" just youngsters shooting to the front which keeps the pace constantly high. It still surprises me that VB, VM & ladies leave before them. To date the conditions are looking pretty good.

All im hoping is that the A group will be faster than last year..

Impossible is nothing :)

Well I will be on the front end with you. My goal is to beat my PB (which is 2:57 from E last year). I was gunning for a similar time of around 2:45 (my dad's PB too), so I hope the guys will be motivated to ride hard but not kill it.

I have a weight disadvantage - me and my steed clock in just over a century in Kg's but I feel that I am ready for this one.

Edit: typo

I HAVE to give my PB of 3h00:18 a go this year. Is this possible out of C group? My main concern is that I don't think I have the shape currently to hook onto the racing snakes in this group?

More weight, more musculature (if you're not overweight)...

More musculature = more power...

{not good for the Alps though}

I was with you in E last year and finished in 2h56 so we should be around the same strength (i hope)

My bike weight plus myself = +/-75kgs

And for the first 70kays you wont see me but as soon as we hit chappies the guys are going to go for it..

We just need a group of about 20 SENSIBLE guys to drive to the line with us.

(yes i have talked to friends in A and we have a strategy)

Feel free to help out Tiny K.

Ah, so you are one of those...... Leaches. Sit snug in the bunch for the first half (or more) of the race and then miraculously appear towards the last bit and hammer the guys who were doing all the work in the beginning...... strategy, yes. Pro, no.

Do your turn up front early on and then pop off into the bunch for your strategy follow through. Just saying.

p.s. I hate wheelsuckers  Pacelines are cool

so are you RS or RMM? (initials).

I was knackered at the finish last year from working off the front during the race (to the degree that I could net even push the pedals - just kept the legs going without any major force behind it). This year I will ride more conservatively and with more wisdom. Had a good DC and Burger, so hope the legs pull through for the final race of the summer season. Dunno what PPA seeding you have been riding - I was in B for most of summer.

feel like shedding a tear when reading this, worked hard for my A seeding, trained hard for a good argus, havent been sick in 18months and picked up the flu this week. Last of antibiotics today and feeling much better, hoping for a overnight miracle full recovery and then I will see you guys there in A. Have to make the call tomorrow.

Otherwise if I dont recover I might just cruise a 5-6hour argus with the guys from the Give ma a chance childrens foundation in their charity bunch.(but that would be a massive anticlimax :-)
