Does a timing chip placed on a bike's fork have to be absolutely straight in the vertical? I've just put my chip on my bike and the plastic mount seems to be slightly bent, by just a few degrees, from being clamped by the QR. am I being neurotic thinking I need a new one? How much tolerance is there to these things reading properly?

What is a "chip", where do I wear it, and how does it work?

A chip is actually a Tiris transponder which is uniquely coded, so that every one can be identified. You should wear it either on your ankle (using the strap provided), or on your front fork using a specially provided bike mount (R20).

When it enters an electrical field, it is charged and releases a signal. Timing mats situated on the ground at the start and finish of an event are used to read this signal, and from this calculate a time for each athlete. Your time starts when the gun for your group is fired. Chips read optimally when they are positioned vertically, and when they have no metal between them and the ground. For running, there is no "wrong way" of wearing a chip.

BUT for cycling, DO NOT attach your chip to the front fork (metal in your axle/skewer will cause interference), your shoe lace (chips lies horizontally and there is the metal of the pedal between the chip and the ground), or any other metal tube of the bicycle.

Vertical (more so) than horizontal. No need to get it down to the final degree. Just set it pointing downwards by hand & eye.

THANX for the replies!

Ok, it's vertical but twists slightly outwards - but what you're all saying is this is no big deal.

I'll look at options suggested but it seems I am being a bit OTT?

@covie - post above yours contradicts??

Thanx again!

Yea it does they would love you to buy their R20 brackets that will break or loose your chip in which case you need to replace both, Been riding like that for 2 years now all good not a single chip lost.

Never lost a chip, nor broken any brackets but then I do not use it on MTB events.

It's an RFID tag. As long as its anywhere with 50cm of the mat it will pick up. I strap mine to my shoe

I do pigeon tag style on the ankle.

no hassles evva.

Like Blue Teeth. get within range and you're good.
