Ive been wondering on this...Lets say you train hard on day 1...(e.g. you do your typical 40 km ride but at full tilt)...now clearly day 2 your performance will be worse....and as you rest your body recover and then at some point your performance is now actually a bit better.

How many days is that? And when I say performance I actually mean fitness/lower RHR.

It really depends on the individual and hordes of other factors. Best is to get hold of one of Joe Friel's training books. Lots of good stuff in there.

i agree that training helps! :)

i only jumped on a bicycle in november last year.. did a 30 km on the first day with probably 6 stops.. and i wanted to quit..

rode the argus on sunday and completed in 4:04

i didnt over push myself, and i know i could have done it maybe 10-15 mins quicker..

but i enjoyed my first argus with no cramps.. (all due to the training)

Roughly speaking, the training you do now will show in two week, but as mentioned previously, is a relative idea that differs from person to person.

When training correctly, adaptations will only be visible in 3mths time and are noticeable. To go full tilt for 40km everyday will not yeild positive results as you will be fatgiued and not have time to recover and let the training take effect.

Can anyone also shed some light on how long it takes to lose the gains from training?

read an article where novices was put on training program. Apparently there results improved 100% over a period of 8 weeks.

When they were asked to stop training the and tested after 4 weeks they had lost all there gains.

On the other hand they tested pro's that stopped training for 3 months and found they only lost 50% of their fitness. can not remember where I read this though. But it tell you if you have been fit for longer it will stay with you for longer.
