So I have a mate who is keen to buy a MTB, budget about 8000 (still a student).

I think the most important things are reliability, Hydraulic Discs and I would think an Air Shock would be a great thing if its possible in the price range.. Hard tail 26"..

I'm content with my bikes so i haven't really been keeping an eye on the market..

Some help please guys...

visit www.thesportsbasement.co.za or goto their shop... they have some really nice Specialized or Trek's in that segment... Plus they are lekker okes, and will sort you out...

Most LBS will offer you a decent Merida in that segment too... also a decent option...

However, if you buy a Spez or a Trek at least or hopefully he wont suffer from UPGRADE syndrome as quickly as one does when this sport gets you...

Ja i checked that Trek 6000 at the sports basement.. All good except a spring loaded shock.. I have air - but how does spring compare?

Chalk and cheese. Even the entry level air shocks is a lot better than spring ones.
