Thanks SuikerBossie

I had a look at their site as well.

They are only getting stock at the end of May.

Maxxis SA says, "We unfortunately dont have stock of the Ikon in 26" at this stage as the market demand has been for 29er."

Looks like I am going to have to get the Racing Ralphs.

Sho. I must be going too slowely then. Unless you are a downhiller, I'm convinced that the choice of tyre for most XC and Marathon races don't make THAT much of a difference... In a XC or marathon race, you REALLY have to be leaning a tyre hard to loose grip. So unless you are riding with a 1.25" slick, anything from a semi-slick to a full knobbed tyre should give ample grip and not wash out. I've raced everything from WTB Vulpines (very slick) to very grippy Rocket Rons. Did I wash out on either of those? Nope. Actually, the last time I washed out was 9 years ago when I did a DH race on my XC bike and wash taking chances. I've done races (and finished well), on 1.5" Continental Cross Country tyres and had plenty grip.

Back in the day, call it mid 90's, you had one bike. With that bike you rode XC and DH at all the races. You just dropped your seatpost 3 inches. Suspension was 2-2.5", with the bad-ass downhill bikes packing 4" travel. So the bike and choice of tyres didn't help much. You were forced to improve your handling skills. Maybe over the years MTB'ing has become too commercialized, with companies telling us that you need this tyre, that tyre, etc to get optimal grip for whatever condition. Back then you put whatever tyre you thinked LOOKED cool on your bike, and you nailed all races and all conditions on that rubber untill the canvas started showing. Today we get emotional about a lack of grip... which must be the tyre's fault of course... :whistling:

hahha Azonic.. but i have to confess: i dont get the same grip from my XC vs DH setups. First off, and mostly obviously, they are diff in width, brand, tread pattern, compound and pressure.

Despite me cursing the XC tires (kenda neveragains) time and time again for nearly washing out on what i consider benign corners, I realized it was my lack of patience with determining the optimal pressure for my tires. most of us dont use pressure gauges. Thumb press tests are well, agriculturally lucky at best. but i found the right pressure for my weight and style of riding, and am now pretty happy with the NeverAgains.

Hey Azonic.

I have to agree with what you had to say.

I am very happy with my Onza Canis tyres. I have never had a problem with them in the dry. I'm doing Sani2c and wanted a slightly more aggressive tyre in case it gets a bit wet.

Thanks Rouxtjie, will get hold of them!

Got the ikon on my 29'er and not a bad tyre so far, that said its normal foldables and not UST, or the exo versions but so far they have been holding up. Im between getting the ikon UST versions or the Schalwbe racing ralph snake skins,

Happy with the performance of the IKON

Know that the evo schwalbe is useless, the snakeskin is better, they grip like crap on a woolen jersy but wear quickly.

tough choice to make.

I just wish more ppl would understand that you cant have super grip, and a long lasting tyre. This is a pure generalisation with no reference to any in specific: but it's f'ing annoying when they bitch the "the tyre wear's too quickly" without providing context for the use, or the fact that it is a soft compound, high grip carcass. It misinforms those looking for options and polarises opinions on brands. I'm wishing for something tantamount to a solution to world hunger and/or peace, but dayum!

Agreed best scenario is getting ikons for training and the schwalbe's for races. if your inclined to spend the money, Though im fairly impressed with the IKON and i hated every single other maxxis tyre with excpetion to the Ardent.

oi, that gets really pricey, cos u know that after a few tire changes, you start thinking about separate wheelsets just to make life easier... and boy, is it pricey.. <_<

I need .... errr want to upgrade my wheelset anyway so the new ones will have racing ralph/rocket ron combo on AM classics, the stock wheels with ASPEN/IKON will be the training set.
