will be my first, nervous anticipation.

Mine too, a few years ago I wanted to do it but somehow got talked out of doing it. So this year, no nay-sayers, no logic, no super extended training plan, just do it!

Don't do it. You will suffer like never before. Might even have to push your bike on some of those climbs  . It is not for sissies

Just go for it. There is much more satisfaction when people want to know whether you have done the Argus and you reply, no, but I have managed the JOCK!

I've done this race way back in 1997 and 1998. From what i can remember this year's race looks like the same route more or less.

Most important lesson I learnt from 1st race is not to nail it from stage 1. That year I was the 3rd mtb over the climb on stage 1 and suffered for the rest of the race. If you're on a MTB the clims should be ok, I can remember many guys on road bikes pushing and wanting to d*nner their bikes down the cliff.

A very nice race with nice vibe at the finish. Something I really want to do again sometime.

I also agree with what Look695 said about the Jock, its not named after that tough never say die Staffie for nothing!

So how hard should I be training for this? I know it's all relative, I'm not planning on racing, if I enter, and I also have no issue with the distance.

I've heard from some that although the climbs are tough, the waiting between stages is what gets you too.

Stage 2 used to start at 9am. Now it's 8h30, leaving me less time to finish, and gulp down a food and drink before stage 2.

Staggered start from 6h30=I will probably be on the road at 7.

Back in the fit/young day (2003) I got to Nelspruit at 8h20. No point of rolling into town just to carry on straight into stage 2.

(and don't tell me to train harder. It's not an option.)

I've done about 3 rides(2xIDT) before Kremetart, and is currently being laid low with a threatening brochitis despite antibiotics, cough mixture & cortisones. No training since Kremetart :(

I might, just might start again this week on the IDT.... Going to be 100% under prepared for this. Maybe the top 50% of finishers then?

Training slipped a bit.... Picked up a chest infection/bronchitis thing after the Creamy Tart. Two weeks of no training :(

Oh well, play the cards dealt to you they say! Hopefully a bit of Suikerbosrand will sort me out!

So, no new routes for the Jock. Back to the old one? Have no idea of either, nor how much climbing is involved...

Anybody else (unfit-ish) who cares to do all 3 stages? I'd love to do it.... Not sure whether I should pack hiking boots as well?

Trubie, CycleWizz, Andyr249, notsoBigben, anybody else? care to join on a mad expedition up the hills?

edit: stages, not days

I will be doing it with Rooiwillie and Andre(the GM) we are a bit behind in our training schedule... like 2years behind!

its gonna be a long day!

Yikes! Leaves you with very little ice cream time in between stages!

No Boulders! Love that climb. Oh well, new route should be fun. The road down Hilltop is now in great shape, so should be fine descent :-))

Way I read it, Stage 2 included boulders + 30k's of **** loads of climbing (gulp - dry mouth)

Stage distances:

STAGE 1: BARBERTON TO NELSPRUIT VIA HILLTOP – 42KM

STAGE 2: NELSPRUIT TO KAAPMUIDEN VIA BOULDERS – 58.8KM

STAGE 3: KAAPMUIDEN TO BARBERTON – 54KM

aarghhh cannot be that bad! Nobody ever accused the organizers of crimes against humanity... I'm going with my 53/39 x 11/25. Should I drag the Powertap up those hills too?
