Well after muuuuuuuuch debating with V12 Man (thanks for the help!) and myself, I've decided to go this route. Life's too short for bad coffee!

Excellent choices, WW. After six years, I'm starting to get over the shock of spending a similar amount of money on an espresso machine and grinder, but I've been drinking great coffee all that time!

One of the best things about having a proper grinder and machine is experimenting with different coffees. I've been blending Ethiopian beans roasted two ways - Yirgachefe roasted a little darker than the Sidamo - and it's really excellent. Also brought back some Balinese coffee from Jakarta, which smells a bit... equine, but blended with the Sidamo is simply magnificent.

Enjoy!

PS: if you can get a group discount on those Simonellis, PLEASE don't tell me. I'm in enough trouble.

Finally got my Oscar. Very happy with it, just my skills are barista that are lacking

Excellent service from Alessandro at Tazzadoro, we talked coffee for over an hour and he was still willing to see me 6:30pm on a Friday!

2nd hand Mazzer Super Jolly Grinder to follow in the week

Going to get it serviced and sprayed to match the Oscar

WW, when I got my machine (a double boiler Expobar) I was practically suicidal, because I was simply unable to make a respectable espresso and I had spent a fortune (for me). So I turned to the chat forum for my machine, where I was told you can't pull a decent shot - with any machine - unless you have a good grinder. So when you get your Super Jolly, life will look up.

In my case, I took a deep breath and paid the extra for a Mazzer Mini (little brother to the SJ) and immediately the magic happened... until this week, when my Brewtus broke down. It's in the shop right now, and I'm making do with my Aeropress (which, to be honest, is not bad at all, with freshly roasted and ground beans...).

But no, V12man, that does NOT mean that I'm interested in the Simonelli. No way. Not even slightly. Other than in an academic sense...

Yip thanks GB I'm looking forward to it!

Must say that the little Krups isn't doing too badly for what it is, but the inconsistency is quite obvious.

Starting to get some better foam, poured a sort of artistic looking trampled flower

I had use of a Nespresso mini for about a year, fantastic quality and choice of flavours.

However, about 6 months ago I was wandering thru Checkers of all places and they had a Sienna Caffelux pod machine on special at R999. Same pressure rating and its own range of pods, 5 different flavours. It also takes the Nespresso pods.

As good as the Nespresso, good foam on the presentation. We have a separate frother plus minus R80 that completes the package. I only use filtered water as I believe this is the key.

When I use instant the best in my opinion is Jacobs Kronung.
