From my research the Oscar is one of the best entry level proper home machines. I love mine and would definitely recommend it. I would advise saving up money and rather buy once. But depends on your needs - what do you want/need Stephan?

Do you have the Nuova Simonelli?

Thanks, thought it might be too good to be true...

Will have to save up as the Oscar is out of my budget range at the moment... Any thoughts on the Gaggia Baby Dose machine(around 2k)? Or should I rather just save for a few months and buy an Oscar?

Save for a better machine....

A good barista that knows what they are doing can get the smaller machines to deliver ok quality - but it is a big stretch to ask a beginner to get it right - and it is hugely frustrating - much easier to work with a competent grinder and machine - even if it does cost more. it saves in the long run.

Nespresso is the only way to go. Clean, fast, easy to use. Lots of different "flavours" too. No ride starts without an espresso.

Yes the Oscar model. Love it!

I almost bought an Oscar earlier this year.

There was one available on Gumtree for R6000 including the matching grinder.

I just didn't have the money at that moment. Spent all of it on my car's service.

Damn.

Swiss made Jura is the best. Good service. Took mine to the same guy who sold it for a 1000 cup service, yes a 1000 cups. Still working like the first day. Put in beans and water and make whatever you want. Google it

Thanks guys, not in market, but will be soon. Having good service with my current Maranello pod machine.

Also not confident buying 2nd hand , unless I really know what I am looking at.

But new prices are STEEP and also don't want to get "too much" machine for home use.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to buy TOO MUCH machine for home use... :)

It is completely POSSIBLE to have your wife beat you up for spending that amount of money on coffee kit - it is also completely possible she might not allow it in her kitchen...

I basically want a hands on machine that makes a good espresso(starts with fresh beans and a good grinder) and a capable steamer. I think a dual boiler will be overkill for my use as I won't be making more than 2 cups per use...

Yeah this was my criteria too, bought the Oscar as it's a heat exchanger. Waiting for a single boiler. Ain't no one got time fo that!
