I am looking for a new bike computer - either the garmin 500, garmin 800 or the bryton 50. Heard the Bryton aftersales is a lot better - but how do they compare, ease of use, accuracy etc?

I've had nothing but outstanding help from their support department, and well other than a flat battery on the cadence/speed sender it's absolutely great unit. (Edge 500)

connect.garmin.com is also a great site.

How is the software/apps?

If you have a Mac there is an app called Garmin Training Center, and there is connect.garmin.com for online.

I am finding that it offers a lot of information and is easy to set up and use.

Does something keep going wrong with the Bryton that you would need aftersales service?

Garmin all the way! Much more ... do a search been discussed a million times here.

3rd party software ... SportTracks .. same search.

You will be sorry if you bought the Bryton. ... I am very disappointed as I bought the Cardio 35 and it really Micky Mouse compared to Garmin I asked it could do certain functions and was tod it could by local rep, which was a total lie.

Garmin is the way to go.

GTC is the absolute worst piece of software around. http://connect.garmin.com is nice for storage/accumulation, but does not allow much(anything) in the line of analysis. SportTracks is the way to go! Not sure that it reads Bryton files natively though

+1 on that. Bought my wife a Bryton - has never worked properly (cadence & heart rate) and Bryton........quite frankly don't give a crap

Garmin is the way. Having them direct in SA is a huge bonus.

Every product has its issues, and Garmin are way farther up the maturity curve than anyone else. The real deal-breaker is what happens when you DO need to resolve something.

I was standing in the start chute at Buffelspoort Ultra Tri with my own brand new 910 from CRC, and told the guy next to me that i wasn't concerned about local support as I had never really needed it before. 910 filled with water on that first swim and I ended up needing warranty support that very day!

it got sorted here with no issues.

I have owned (and mostly still do) every model of Cycling Garmin since the first Edge models, and the last 2 versions of Forerunner, and the evolution has been amazing.

Wholeheartedly recommended.

What functions are you talking about?

No point bashing it but not mentioning what it can't do.

On a Mac? I'm having no trouble and it has plenty of features, more than connect.garmin.

Sport tracks doesn't have a Mac app.
